Rusty's not very quiet cuda progress

He's a glutton for punishment, got all the pieces fitted up for the final cuts & then started cutting out the lower corner of the cab!

I gave up on that stuff after the problems it caused on the first car, I guess for under there it's fine?
I'm not convinced that stuff is any better than Industrial Rustoleum. I've got black paint all over the floor from laying under the Duster brushing that stuff on.
 
First car I had a few issues with it, other parts held fine, & I tried to follow their instructions to the T.
This car is all spray bomb rustolium rusty metal primer everywhere, lot of people po poooed that, so far nothings peeling off?
 
Kinda back to square one, Go out today & start her up, geeze the gauge is reading just over 4, hasn't done that in awhile, so I play with the adjustment which is almost all the way in, this reg. is supposed to be from 4 to 10LBS.
Would not go up much, so I set it at 3, let her run awhile it then dropped to 1 & even lower, barley over zero, the idle speed or sound of the engine never changed.
So I'm like I can't trust this thing, remembered I had an in line gauge somewhere, dug around a bit & found it, removed the reg. & put that in started her up & running around 7.
Still no response from the carb adjustment screws, it did stall when I covered the top of the carb, checking the vac leak deal.
Pulled a plug before I took the test drive. 20250328_125839 - Copy.jpg20250328_125852.jpg20250328_122538.jpgtook the test drive, actually seemed to idle a little smoother, no big clouds of smoke, went on some main roads so I could at least do 45-50.
Kickdown worked again & got another nice chirp
Cooled it down a bit & piled the plug again, doesn't look terrible to me, I'd say the exhaust stinks a bit more, but no big black clouds, some gray puffs.

With an Eddy carb your idle fuel pressure should be no more than 6 psi at idle. The 2nd pic of the plug is a major improvemnt over the 1st. But still slightly darker than ideal. It seems that you are getting closer.
 
Well now we went through 2 pressure regulators, I hesitate to buy another, but it's now an easy setup.
I keep going back to your fuel filter with the bypass, but that will be a pain trying to turn my vapor return line into a fuel return, I do have a return stub on my fuel pick up unit????
So it's not connected to anything up front & out back just pull it off the Seperator in front of the tank & hose it over to the return stub, just don't feel like crawling around under there.

Will 1 lb less actually make the adjustments work, the mixture screws do NOTHING?
 
OK I'm dense, so if they are the only source at idle, where is the fuel bypassing?
Even when It was supposedly running at 3 lbs, the screws did not have much effect then either.
Still trying to decide if I see if summit will warrantee the reg. if so it's easy to try another all set for it.
Or mess with converting my vapor return to a fuel return & try 68's bypass fuel filter?
 
Alright, today it was 1 pump & it fired right up, but I don't think it caught high idle, it started dying & I had to give it a little gas till it warmed up. (cooler in the garage maybe 55/60?
Guage was showing 6 lbs, so I messed with the screws again, just as I got to closed I noticed a slight decrease in idle?
Went back to open both 1 1/2.
So I let it cool down it's still about 75 out, I pressed the throttle & checked, it did not catch high idle, so I set that by hand & fired it up, on high it didn't try to die & stayed running, after warm there was not much exhaust smoke but it smelled pretty strong, Mark said try the screws now, went in 1/2 turn each, that actually did something, not really nasty standing in the exhaust.
Left it there till the next test drive.
Sooooo, first will the high idle set in warm weather if so I have to figure why that's not working, gonna try & find the book & see if they mention that?
Oh yea, the pressure was back to 7 thru all that.

With the "vapor separator" (filter) all that's needed is to plumb the return line anywhere prior to the fuel pump. Because you car did not originally come with an Eddy/carter style 4bbl you need to regulate fuel pressure for it.

When I swapped the 2bbl on my 318 for 2x4's, (Carters), I added the vapor separator filter and plumbed it with a "T" fitting just prior to the fuel pump.

The factory used a similar system on cars that came with Carter 4BBL's, but they plumbed it all the way to the tank.
 
I have the return line in there that was meant for the vapor return, at the tank fairly easy (cept for crawling under there) just cap that little tank in front of the gas tank & run the line to the return that's now capped at the pick up.
Up front it's way up the front of the inner fender, either hose it up there or cut it down by the frame rail & tie in, it's doable, I'm just not enthusiastic about doing it!
 
OK, so today I checked that it set the high idle & it did, still started to die on me, gave it a little gas to keep it running till warm, kicked it down & it did stay running, put it in gear & also stayed running, so before I came in I raised the high idle one turn, will try again when cold tomorrow!
Now on the high idle lever, these 2 spots I can set it at, the top point (the tip} & then the notch below that, I manually put it on that top one & the idle was very high, are there 2 points or is the first notch the spot, brought in the book to see if they mention it?
 
Read some of the book on the carb, seems the point it set at is correct point on the high idle.
There's like 1000 settings on that carb way over my head at the moment, but I noticed one curious thing, they say fuel pressure over 6 1/2 is too much, could 1/2Lb cause all this chaos!
Trying the startup in a little while?
