Rusty's not very quiet cuda progress

Todays check, no leaks (yet)but the pressure did bleed off over night?
Put the jack stands in the garage but couldn't force myself to jack it up & test from the cable up.
Only one more mild day it's tomorrow or next heat wave!

Forced myself to start on the speedo problem, jacked up the back & got just enough room to get under & loosen the cable at the tranny, could not get either one of my drills to catch the cable, after hunting around & trying to find a way to grab it I finally got a small pointy vice grip on it, turning but hand I got a couple of tiny blips out of the speedo, my bigger drill was able to get on the vice grip, I closed my eyes & prayed that it wouldn't fly out of my hands when I triggered the drill, to my surprise it ran rather smoothly! whew, dodged a bullet there. Butttttt nothing at the speedo.

So somehow I wormed my old body under there & again to my surprise I got my hand all the way up the cable, now something did feel loose , when I shook the cable last time nothing moved at the connection.
Finally got it off & found this20241231_150431.jpgNow with it out the cable slides both ways pretty easy20241231_150553.jpgwhen I pushed it back in a ton more stuck out at the bottom, that I could have gotten the drill on! 20241231_150501.jpg20241231_150614.jpgSO I'm hoping & praying I didn't break that right now & it was the problem all along, did not see any chunks of plastic in the car!

The first thing I looked at was the tranny fitting, to me it sure looks round I hope that's not bad too?
hard to get a close up tranny linkage in the way, I zoomed on a couple? 20241231_142208 zoom.jpg20241231_142212.jpg20241231_142601 zoom.jpg20241231_142601.jpg

OK couple of questions, do I have to pull & measure the cable or is it a part I can order with mod & eng/tranny combo ?

Second, this gets pulled out from the eng bay correct?

Gonna go search for a cable now.

At classic the OER # 3592360 shows a wrench type nut at the tranny, all the others I see it's a round fitting, not sure if the round are the same thread size 57 bucks

Same Part # on amazon 35, but that has the round nut.
Amazon also has a Slakerbe ????? replacement for the part # for 25 also round nut at tranny.

I hate this, I miss you Jass!!!

Save your searching for other things. There may just be a simpler & easier fix. The connection for the speedo head is broken with a chunk missing, which allowed the cable end to not fully engage. What you need to do is find an epoxy that will bond the white plastic connector to the cable housing. First I would spray some carb cleaner around the missing portion to remove any lube. Then use a product from Loctite called "Extreme Glue". Loctite Extreme Glue Gel Available at many stores like Walmart. Get the gel version and lay on several layers to fill the gap. It needs about 24 hrs to fully cure per layer. It is the best I've found to bond plastics, vinyls, ABS plastic & the type. I've used it a few times to repair cracked motorcycle windshields, which Super Glues won't adhere to. It may be best to pull the cable out so that you don't accidently bond that to the housing.

Never have & never have tried this type of repair, time will tell!
Might help me on my HO train projects, I buy junk lots of engines to tinker with & then resell, usually for a small loss but now that the cars pretty much done It will be my main keep me busy hobby!

Saving 60 bucks on the car at this point is pretty much a joke, but it's something to do!

Being the child of a depression era parents, like yourself, we grew up learning how to be frugal. And being from the midwest and being from a family raised by sharecroppers, we had to learn to make do with little of nothing. To me that speedo cable fix is a no-brainer. When Ihave something break I ask myself, "How can I fix this?" And also, "How can I make this better?"

Yea, I like to fix things too, tried to instill some of those values in my sons, at least they are all hard workers, as for fixing things maybe 2 out of the 3, but 3 does well enough to pay others to do the fixing so I can live with that.
A lot of the young people I encounter are pretty much useless!
