Yep, a good solid day's ride. :(

That fender isn't bad but it would need to be cut, fixed and re-welded. I've done similar.
Solid looking sheetmetal there.:giggedy:
 
Nah, bringing stuff across for repair is pretty straightforward. There is a procedure to follow but it's simple enough.
 
I spent some time working on the Oakland today. I wounder if I get double time and a half for working on thanksgiving? :D

I'm surprised how nicely the firewall cleaned up. I went after it with a scrub brush, some "Purple power" and some water.

Brian climbed into my chair, I handed him a wrench, and he tried to put it on the wheel nuts. My boy is a natural! :D

Wow, he's getting big already. Taking after dad in all ways. The firewall looks amazing with just a little cleaning and elbow grease.
 
I pulled the front wheels and brakes today and spent some time cleaning 85 year old grease off of those parts. I can't believe how nice this thing is coming apart. I've worked on 2 year old cars with more rust. I've taken everything apart with hand tools and my fingers. Break them loose and turn with my fingers!

Man these brakes are wild! 100% Mechanical. Lets see who can see what is odd about them. :D

Isn't the engineering...and craftsmanship it these old cars amazing!! My 48 Desoto is like that....everything is serviceable!! Excess grease nipples everywhere to keep things lubed and going longer. No sealed bearing there.

Those mechanical band style brakes are cool as hell!! What is the diameter of those drums???
 
I have seen them but never really noticed them before. I have certainly never worked on them before. the engineering and craftsmanship is awesome for sure. The hard part about taking them apart has been getting the clevis pins to free up so they can be removed. The rods are all froze up because of it. It not like I can just heat and beat the parts. I cant have anything break on this thing because I just cant get parts. The stuff we need has to be made.
 
Any of you guys have any ideas for what I should do about the missing leather (or rubber) boots/seals for the brake cam pivot points. They are long gone and no longer available. I need to seal up the pivot points at the frame. I have found some small pieces still banded to the joint. It looks and feels like leather.

I'm going to be cleaning parts today. Hopefully I'll be able to get a better idea of what was used.

At one time you used to be able to buy replacement boots for tie rod ends and ball joints. Something like that work, or are they not available anymore?

Ball bearing wheel bearings... can you say woobly wheels? :)
