Rusty's not very quiet cuda progress

I've got a bunch of the 1" pipe left from my crushed tent (snow got it last winter) original Idea was a 3' or so enclosure (sides & top) to blast bigger parts, most of the good pieces left are 6' & 4' I think, have to stick a few together & see what it looks like.
When I did the interior I laid drop cloths under the car , caught quite a bit to save, but I could see the black in my phony carpet many feet from the car!

i forgot to mention...the trick is to get yourself some positive vac going by adding a box fan and a furnace filter pushing air OUT of the enclosure and put it on high...you can even use cardboard to "duct" if youve got a big round fan instead, as well as using anything you can to semi seal the base edges

Not going that far, I'm thinking 3 sided & maybe a top, all outside, that dust is not getting in my garage, it's bad enough already.
I had to get in the car when I did the interior, with a door open behind me I managed to get it done without too much fogging up.
maybe I'll spray on some metal wash to hold the bare metal a few days & work on rigging something up?

I played with the pipes for a while, the short ones would make a nice dog house over the bay, but I'd have to cut a bunch of the longer ones to get there, so I packed those back up for now & just tarped everything up to at least shoot the pesky corners in the bay.20210918_105002.jpg20210918_120147.jpgTalk about a nasty mess, me standing/kneeling in the bay one hand on the hose in the bucket the other shooting black beauty everywhere, I think I got more in my hair & clothes then at the target, but I did get those pesky corners pretty clean..20210918_123650.jpg20210918_123644.jpgI still have to deal with that section over the break booster.20210918_123639.jpgnow I blasted for about a half hour, took about 1 1/2 to clean up, including a shower for me!!!20210918_120203.jpgI'd say I trapped about 90% of it, still got a lot in the cab I didn't clean yet but from here I pick up the ends of the drop cloths & make piles to vaccume up. I found some 20' from the car! 20210918_121935.jpgI shot a little into the cowl, that's nasty too, won't get too much but I guess I'll hit whet I can & then spend weeks trying to get the media out! 20210918_120159.jpgAt least I had enough left (energy that is) to clean & prime the rest of the bay, so that's ready for winter! 20210918_150950.jpg

On what was supposed to be a day off I went out just to clean up the rest of the media, there was a lot in the car & one the hood that was on a table 5' away, hit a few piles on the ground & got most of the rest out of the cowl, quite a bit I'd say about 2 lbs! 20210919_105759.jpgThat went pretty quick so I started playing with the pipes again, the problem was the front legs, so the old A/C guy grabbed the duct tape & at least got it to stand up.20210919_112518.jpg then I pulled the other half of the old tent cover & cut a piece to do the back wall & up & over the top putting it on was fun, the piping was pretty flimsy , so after I got one side on I anchored that leg to the fence. 20210919_123831.jpgStuck the other side on & tried to make all the joints/folds keep the media in, we will see on the test tomorrow, she ain't perty but I hope functional! 20210919_130745.jpgThe final idea is a white drop cloth for the floor & a big one on the ground out front, I'm hoping that top flap will keep some of it out of my face!
If I can get these first few parts done it will save me many wire wheels & hours of carpel tunnel drilling! 20210919_130756.jpg20210919_130800.jpg

btw the fan trick is NOT about the dust, its actualy to "slow" it from haulling ass across the yard LOL, even in an open setup like that it still helps, as your body is halfthe blockage for the open space

I had a car that had been sand blasted and it ended up all in the cowl. It would sand blast you driving down the road with the vents open. I eventually took it all apart and cleaned it up as good as I could.

I've got a couple of fans I use when workin the mud , worth a try for the blasting too, I'll add it to the set up list!

I still have to blast the cowl, but I did clean it better today it is a royal pain getting in there, my arms are all bruised up, I still find it in the car when I open & close the doors, I leaf blew the roof frame 5 or 6 times already, still some in there! but it's better than rust!

OK here goes nothin, the set up20210920_101814.jpg trying what should be an easy piece first 20210920_102524.jpgMaybe there's no easy piece, took pretty much the whole bucket to get it ahhhhh pretty good? 20210920_142013.jpgcontained the mess pretty well, 20 minuets to clean it all up20210920_104951.jpgNot sure how much the fan did, but it kept me cool & none of it stuck to my sweaty forehead!
I did find a use for it , there was a lot of dust when I was sifting last time, so I set the fan a few feet from the bucket & it did quite well blowing the dust away before it hit the sifter.
probably lost some beads but hopefully the next round will be less dusty?

Round 2 went for the K frame, had a lot of trouble with the blaster, would only shoot for a few seconds & clogged, kept blowing back & restarting once in a while I would get a few minuets out of it, saw what looked like moisture on the metal, so I drained my filter & the bottom of the compressor, I guess I forgot about those , way more came out than usual, still had trouble, added a cheap filter before the gun, my last attempt I got it a little better by holding the hose at the top of the media & letting less in, but still a hassle.
Another whole bucket shot & no where near done, round 3 tomorrow!20210920_141958.jpg

Blaster is still not right, I would think you could just stick the hose in the bottom of the bucket & go, just won't work for me, turned pressure down to 80, tried 90, gave up & turned it all the way up again, compressor seems able to maintain about 100lbs.
I did get it to work better by holding the suction hose at the top of the media & just skimming the edges, could at least get a few minuets at a time before clog.
So it took almost 2 hours to go through the bucket, did finish off the K frame 1st bucket..........20210921_132653.jpgput a pretty good dent in one lower control arm, this was the worst one, maybe if it don't rain I get get both done tomorrow? 20210921_180630.jpg Another question here, how do I prep this for paint, just wax & grease remover & shoot?
should I give it a quick wire wheeling, can't remember what I did on the few parts I had blasted on the other car?

depending on the part ive been known to run em thru the dishwasher.....and my wife dont mind

typicaly blast em with clean air, then wipe n prime, the ONLY reason you would need to de-grease would be if you left obvious spots behind..same goes for wheelin ...i do ALOT of motorcycle parts and if youve made it to bare metal there is nothing left to degrease, if your leaving paint and color behind however then youll want to be more diligent about your prep, bare metal needs pretty much nothing, the wipe down is just to get the dust thats sticking off

Since you're asking about a need to de-grease after blasting ... you realize the blaster works a lot better if you de-grease before blasting, right?

The parts I recently did were cleaned up, blasted bare, wiped down with prepsol, then shot with etch primer and then color. Or more accurately the absence of color - it was black paint.

Yes I did de-grease, about 7 cans of gunk on those parts & the engine block & tranny, gunk ain't what it used to be, didn't really foam up like it did in the olden days, guess the greenies got that formula too!
50 lbs of fresh media (black beauty) arrived today, which I totally wasted, chance of showers all day, after 10 am NOT A DROP but I didn't want to start & then get the media wet!
Anyway I put 25 lbs in a fresh bucket, will try that next chance I get & see if the blaster works any better, I've been sifting (with some dust removal) after each shoot, but I can see some trash in it???

yup i switched to oil eater atleast 15 years ago when gunk started being high priced shit...sometime around then i was also shown simple green..and while i HATE the stuff..it WORKS..the 3rd choice is purple power, all 3 work AMAZING.....if your "spraying" alot of stuff down get a cheepo harbor fright air compressor sprayer gun that can pull from a 1gal jug, it will save your fingers and keep you from destroying spray bottles...especialy usefull on BIG parts like engine bays and undercarages before dissasembly

one bonus to purple power is..if your "soaking" parts or letting them sit..you can useualy see where its sitting and atleast to me..is the most pleasant to the nose

"if" you can.....you might want to look into a setup like i did..a hot water tap outside, great for presurewashing your deck, bbq, washing the dog etc, but crank just the hot thru the presurewasher after spraying something down with any of the 3 above mentioned degreasers you you get parts steamed to perfection, you wont get a whole lot of "run time" of pure hot but i tell you what you get amazingly clean parts...i typicaly save this for engine bays, engines, axles, trans and bikes

I've heard of purple power, the guys on the model train forum actually use it to strip paint on the plastic engine shells, I would assume that's pretty strong.
On the other fronts I'm trying my best to make do with what I have, this will probably the last car I will do, I already have way too much for the kids to deal with when I croak, so I'm only replacing necessary tools & trying not to add to the mess.
Since Mom moved in & I lost my train room, I have 20 or so boxes full of HO train stuff in the attic & the tables broken down up in the rafters in the garage & another 15 or so boxes out there.
A little "train" area out there so I can tinker with stuff when I take a break or the weather keeks me off the car.
Set up on one of the back benches.................

i had no idea purple power could strip paint on plastic WOOOT..i used to use citri strip but the formula is garbage now

i WISH i had my HO stuff but one of moms early caregivrers walked off with most of it...its on my someday list atleast ive got my truck load of tyco/afx slotcar stuff, along with some HO crossings still
of all the missing stuff i know most of it cant be replaced as i had some of the cool 60s stuff like an overhead wire streamliner, an amtrac set, as well as a whole rockisland setup, tbh tho i want my santafe plymouth pusher that lil bastard was a beast and made for a great track cleaner n tester
