Rusty's not very quiet cuda progress

Oh my, this can't be good, what do I do with that?

Will hit the book tomorrow & see what they show/talk about, if anything?

Kinda figured that, looked at a few last night, they are all round & don't have that "oblong" thing out the front, is that a separate part or they're just made different now?
Geeze, summit has tons, from 100 to 650

this one says OE style for 100 ? harmonic balancer..jpg

The balancer is definitely junk. The damper ring has slipped so far it's touching the timing cover. You need to replace it.

All 360 balancers are the same, with the same amount of offset weight, but they did it two ways: First it had the large offset extra weight like yours, while later ones had a large groove in the balance ring 180° off from where the weight is on yours:

Either style will work fine. The bolt pattern and flange depth stayed the same.

Note that I said "all 360s" which refers to LA engines. You cannot use one from a 5.9L "Magnum" engine as the amount of imbalance weight is different and it will shake like mad. You can't use any of the other cast-crank balancers, such as from a 340, 383, 400 or 440.

Dayco and Dorman make new ones, along with the usual race vendors. None are particularly cheap.

This one uses a bolt-on weight (you can see the ends of the bolts). Nothing wrong with that, so long as you use the right weight (it'll probably come with three). You may have to rat-tail file one of your pulley holes to get the last bolt in but that's not a big deal. I had to do that on my 440.

That's a Chinese damper. There's also a Mexico-sourced OE copy on eBay that has the "weight removed" strategy used on the later factory dampers. I can't vouch for either one in terms of quality, I'm just giving options.

I suck at searching, parts geek, rock & summit, every one of those 2 brands starts as 72 to 74 which kinda says it won't fit since the 360 started in 73 or 4????

at summit there's one that says small block LA but does not say 360?
Should I just call them,
Part # is SUM-163273

K, at dorman they list #594-132S
at auto zone there's 2, but not available to pick up at my local store, I guess i could go in & order it?
Anyway. one for 128, same # but NO S at the end
one for 292 same # but has an R at the end?

I'm so cornfused!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, I called summit & he had an externally balanced on for that engine (I hope)
part # SUM163318, ordering a new bolt with it.
He didn't have the install tool, but basically I just need a long bolt a nut & some washers!

Trying to get set for this I dug around the tools I got a few years back, I think I have the puller, looks like the one I saw on the video? 20231004_152607.jpgPulled the fan blade off the clutch, next cool day I'll blast that & that pesky backing plate! 20231004_120326.jpg
here's the stat clutch, started cleaning some of the crud of it. 20231004_120340.jpgI may need it, my clutch is a full 3/4" longer, not sure how much room I have? 20231004_155020.jpg

The 360 was introduced in 1971--in C-bodies and trucks. Nothing else got it until 1974, but it's the same engine.

Good luck with that. The only two bolts I've ever seen with that thread are the LA/Magnum damper bolt, and the RB damper bolt.

As I said when I posted the link, that is the exact part number clutch your car would've had new. Same with the blade. Both are factory-engineered to work with your shroud. The other clutch will put the fan too far into the shroud.

I like summit, parts will be here tomorrow, other places had the tool. I'll check a good hardware store if no luck I'll order the tool!

Well I hope I just blasted the last parts for this car!
Fan went easy, 1 bucket got both sides, that backing plate still took 3 buckets to get decent!
Got all of it painted up & was packing up & like an idiot I tried to move the plate & dropped it on the floor & marred up of course the side that shows!
Blobbed some paint & clear over the mess & called it a day! 20231005_160122.jpg20231005_165057.jpg20231005_160131.jpgNow we will see how far my meager skills will get me on the balancer???
