I'll go search a timing chain cover & see what they look like?

If that's not a new seal you should replace it while it's relatively easy to get to and to avoid taking the rad back out to fix it later..
 
OK, I'm making my own tool I hope I got it all right, by the time I did shipping & tax on the ebay tool it was 57 bucks.
So I found a place with the rod, but no nuts & washers, then Zoro saved the day. had it all except the 3/4 washers I got 7/8" they just have to spin so I should be ok?

Damn, you guys always come in after I do something stupid, can I ask how much was the tool?

What about that hole by the timing marks?
 
OK looked at covers, there AINT NO HOLE!!!!

Looks like summit has it I'll call monday to make sure I have the right part #'s
& get the seal while I'm at it, Thanks Bob!
 
Now I'm wondering how this car actually ran & drove when it got here, I just drove it around the neighborhood a few times, so I doubt there was no hole at that point?
From what I can remember there were no big fluid leaks of any note.
Which reminds me I gotta get my radiator to the shop for a recore!
 
Still not pouring when I went out, so I put the fan together, couldn't find anything to do in the garage, still not raining so I test fitted a piece of the roof insulation, a tad short side to side & quite long front to back, trimmed a few inches off & wedged it into the lip in the front & started gluing a little at a time well this stuff started distorting pretty qoick, ended up with too much over the center bar & a lump over the drivers head, did some slicing & dicing & got it into a passable condition!
Was almost done when it started pouring so I packed up & got soaked dragging the tools back in the garage, at least 2 positive things got done.

Now I'm going to get depressed updating my cost sheet with all the new parts! 20231007_132117.jpg20231007_131907.jpg

Well my hopes of getting this done for 25K just went out the window, added up that last big tranche of bills & I'm at 24,881.93 already & I can think of 3 big ticket items off the top of my head, 5 tires, rebuilt A/C compressor & a bunch of parts to go with that & the radiator recore.
This car better bring 40K or better for my kids!
the other one cost me 35 & sold for 25, I would like to break even after this one & only loose 10,0000 hours of labor!

There's not a lot of oil inside the timing cover and that hole is above the resting oil level.so it wasn't like that hole was pouring oil. Just what little bit dripped over there.

It does lead me to question if I should replace my balancer, even though it's not coming apart like yours did.

I keep being told "that road runner's going to be worth $100k when its finished." Yeah maybe, but it's going to cost me $200k to get it to that point.
 
Damn, I guess I should be happy I only lost 10.
It wasn't about the money anyway, It's the building for me, after it was done I really didn't drive it much, maybe with a radio & A/C if I ever get that working I'll drive this one more?
 
I would trust Rick Ehrenberg (first tool you posted, specifically listed as being "For Mopar") before whomever posted that second one. The latter doesn't say what it fits. Virtually every engine in the world has a harmonic balancer and Chevy, Ford, Pontiac, Mopar, Toyota, etc. all have different threads, never mind four-bangers, V6s, etc. That part number used to be an Amazon item number, by the way, but it no longer works. I'm also sure the Mopar balancer bolts are bigger than 5/8".

I think Ehrenberg's bolt/washer/plate setup is insanely overpriced at $43, but I don't know of a cheaper option either. For what it's worth, I have Performance Tool W89711. Proform #66514 is another option, with less adapters and hardware. The Performance Tool set is awesome (there's actually a Torrington bearing between the nut and pusher), but it (and the Proform) are a lot more than you need--especially since you're not going to be doing any more of 'em.

I don't trust anything the guys at Summit say. They're generally friendly and want to help, but other than that are just as useless as Holley tech support. Most aren't car guys anyhow, and those that are only know about the cars they have--if that. After all, they stock the Performance Tool and Proform balancer remover/installers. Your boy didn't tell you that.

Whichever tool you use, make sure the threads are clean before you start, especially in the end of the crank. Make sure the tool is fully threaded into the crank before you start trying to press the balancer onto the snout. There's a lot of force on those threads, and if you pull them out of the crank, you are hosed. There's no fixing that--you're replacing the crankshaft, period.
 
The guy I got at summit was pretty good, he said the tool was not in stock & gave me the bolt size, which I of course screwed up at first. when the new bolt got here I checked the threads & measured it, it's a 3/4 bolt with 16 thread teeth.
He also mentioned heating it up at 200 for 30 mins. before install & a little grease on the snout.
monday I'll order the cover, gaskets & a new seal & muddle along from there.
 
Got a few little things done, got the rear section of insulation on the roof.
