Rusty's not very quiet cuda progress

Wow, I'm too old for these marathons! Did get a lot accomplished, drivers side header is in, but it was a battle. would not drop in from the top & from the bottom they would not clear the starter, Doc, you were right putting the starter in after was A JOB, I put the wires on it & then wormed it in there & fought with the nut & bolt!
then on the headers I had snugged down 2 & went to put the rest in & the 2 tight ones under the angle of the pipe would not even go in the hole, backed off the snuggers & finally got them started.
So when I temped in the other side the bolts did not go in easy, so before I did this side I ran a tap through all the holes. 20230921_150629.jpg
I did not have to do anything with the steering links, caught a little break.
There be a header! 20230921_162658.jpgMann I'm so glad I had a mini starter, not even sure a big one would fit it there.
It's surrounded by pipes, that heat can't be good for it? 20230921_162707.jpg20230921_163001.jpgGotta route the wires next & find a way to get some clearance!

On the bottom so far it looks like the linkage will clear, next time out I'll put on the flange & see what room is left. 20230921_162509.jpg20230921_162521.jpg20230921_162544.jpg
It's pretty far behind & above that flange, not sure how big & fat the other end is yet?

This is the blade I have, is it OK or should I hunt down one for my clutch fan? 20230921_180750.jpg
I do have the shroud that came with the car & a brand new one behind it, I think the new one was a little thinner? 20230921_180814.jpg

Did the easy thing first, routed the starter wire, should be plenty of clearance, the end on the starter is not as close as it looks that pipe is below the starter. 20230922_132731.jpg
then I put the flange on the headers, looks like the linkage should clear even in the stock position, worst case flip it over! 20230922_135734.jpg20230922_135741.jpgThen it was on to the other header, dropped it down & tapped all the threads, gooped up the head & the gasket & stuck it on, this one went a bit easier & I didn't even get orange goop everywhere!
We have headers! 20230922_152539.jpgWhile I was out there I put fresh tap over all the holes, so far no marks left.

& yet more parts to clean & paint, I thought I was done with that! 20230922_152550.jpg20230922_153509.jpg

The pully actually fit in the tumbler, so that hardware is being cleaned as we speak, washed down the outside pieces, a little more grease to get off, then I can paint em up.
So then I hit the books & looked up torque specs for the mounts, got those but couldn't find any on the rear sway bar, the front shows 25(I think) but whatever on the link nuts, would that be the same in the back, the only other bolts back there are into the frame rail.

Then I looked at those gaskets for the rear end again, 2 places it shows 2 gaskets in the line, but no backing plate in there, what does the plate mount to, that inner rear housing hub or after the axle is in. 20230923_134143.jpg20230923_134203.jpg
I'm so cornfused!

Painted up some other hardware & checked out my breathers, the one with the hose nub cleaned up pretty good, but I don't have the right air cleaner for that.
the other was pitted , so I wire wheeled it & shot some blue, get me by for now.20230923_141428.jpg

Not much got done, more rain, managed to get some hardware painted & looked at my rear backing plates & they are a mess, gonna have to set up my makeshift blasting tent one more time!

So I dug through the book again, they don't show the order for the backing plate anywhere, but it looks like it must be on the housing axle wheel flange is out side in all the pics I see.

I'm thinking that actually has to go on 1st, so hard gasket against housing & foam gasket on the backing plate under the retainer flange, do I finally have the right idea?

Well, you can't install the axle until after the backing plate, so there's your solution.

Going on memory (I'll double-check) the metal gasket goes between the backing plate and the housing flange, and the foam gasket goes between the backing plate and the axle retainer.

I had a fan like this on a 1980 Buick Regal with a 350, could hear me coming a mile away. I liked it at the time, but I also like my Uncle's friend's gear drive on a 1939 Chevy, things have changed a lot since then.

Didn't really notice any noise when I drove it, but with the fenders flopping in the breeze there was plenty of other noises to cover it up?

I find hearing the fan over the exhaust note annoying. Flex fans aren't as quite bad as solid fans, though.

Give me the improved everything (power, economy, sound) of a clutch fan every time, thankaverramuch.

OK since I have the clutch I'll hunt around & see if I can find a stock blade, I'll measure that blade & the shroud , I have no idea how they will list the blade.
If it's ebay I'll post the link here so you guys can check that it's the right one!
