Rusty's not very quiet cuda progress

I was exaggerating, went to 2000 on the clear on the other car, now I see 3000 listed, never saw that before, thank god I do not have to do that on the bottom & the interior, the skin is bad enough!

Now this is the way to work!

Watch my friend do the toiling! 20220525_133558.jpg
Good news in Is I got that round done, the bad is It needs another round!

But he's pickier than me , last night I hit a couple of small spots with some putty, sanded that out today & shot 3 more coats of primer, I wonder how many gallons of primer I sanded into the atmosphere on these 2 cars!

got the roof the top of the quarters & the side of one done in 600, I think that's where I'm gonna call it good enough. now in between sanding that & the doors I have to get the interior cleaned up & ready to shoot!

Finished off that door & started on the other, this time I thinned out the primer, didn't need that much build & I was hoping it would lay out better, it did, got that mostly sanded out, also shot 2 coats on one quarter my friend picked up a little low on & 1 coat on the other quarter just to double check. Mann I still have a ton of sanding & cleaning before I can shoot paint!
Here it is after a rinse off of the wet sanding mush.20220531_141049.jpg20220531_141117.jpg

Nice cool day too bad I wasn't paint ready it was ideal out there not too many bugs, no wind & my sweat wouldn't be dripping on my fresh paint!
I did get in a good 5 hours (that's serious overtime for me these days) & got everything sanded down to 600 I went wet this round to keep the dirt down, looks like fri, sat & sun will be good, a little hot but not too bad, so tomorrow in the rain I'll try & get everything cleaned up & ready!!!
Will try & get the complete interior of the shell & the back of the doors painted & cleared.

Did not have enough continuous hours to paint so I went through the big box O goodies that came yesterday. Put a baby dent in the parts I have to buy over the next few years. 20220604_120338.jpg
So now that parts hunting time is here I also started pulling apart the scrap books from the 73, tossed all the materials bills, there were a few (yea now that's an understatement !) & kept all the parts bills, checking on suppliers , will be interesting to see how much the stuff went up in 15 years, I'm sure it's gonna sting!

Managed to get 2 coats of blue on today, the plan was that & the clear, luckily when I was close to the end of the second coat my son & grand son showed up, so I finished that & cleaned up everything, good thing too, I was beat, I'll shoot the clear tomorrow.
Not seeing any glaring missed spots, but when I get the last gallon I'm going to have 2 spray cans made up too so I can shoot in all the cracks & crevasses .20220605_133736.jpg20220605_133811.jpg20220605_133826.jpg20220605_133846.jpg

Z clear is on, blew through almost a gallon of paint & it was just 2 coats, planning on 3 for the exterior. Also have to decide if I shoot the shell as is and panel paint the rest (easier on me) or put it together & shoot the whole car at once. Less chance of chipping the paint, Oh yea, still waiting for some kind of word on the fender I ordered?
Some areas are a little rough & some drips where I tried to shoot a ton of paint , into all the cracks & crevasses all I care about in there is sealing off future rust, so far the parts that show look ok, the trunk floor & the ends of the doors. 20220606_131051.jpg20220606_131114.jpg
Got 3 coats a clear on the ends of the doors. 20220606_131027.jpg

Little stuff today, got that heater box stud ready, went pretty good as I was trying to put that silly point on it I started loosing length so I quit & left it be.
Trying to make the new one look like the other? 20220608_122915.jpg
Also ground the extra threads off the fasteners they don't come up to that lip so should be fine, I did stick it in the car & it seemed to go flush.20220608_123521.jpg
Ground down the head so it's as low as the old stud was. 20220608_125446.jpg
Good ole rube goldberg saves the day!

Then I painted those parts & a bunch of other hardware.20220608_131746.jpg
& finally dug out some parts that have to be blue that I cleaned & primed last year, hosed off the work dust & got them hanging out for the next time I paint! 20220608_131724.jpg20220608_135750.jpg
Now I have to think about what parts I have in those zillion boxes that need blue paint???

Took a day off & went to the paint store to blow another wad of moola!
Hopefully the last gal of paint & clear, that is if I don't mess up.
So I'm taking a break & look over at the door I finished the back of the other day & said to myself, self is that the metal repair corner, why yes it is, not too shabby, a couple of small rough spots & the bottom seam fades a bit but for where it will be on the car I give it a B+ 20220609_170951.jpg
The ole back's been out for a few days now & I'm running out of easy little things to do.
Finished off a couple more batches of hard ware, cleaned the old gaskets off the heater box, all that was left of the foam seals on the doors was the sticky clear paper, & the darn glue was still good on it, pealed off most & a little solvent on the stubborn stuff! 20220611_134622.jpg
Re-tapped all the door hinge nuts............20220612_132608.jpg
& got the motor & tranny mounts painted up , Replaced all my air hose fittings, I had the old T bar system & couldn't find a replacement for one I broke, the new set had ALMOST everything I needed, but short one female & that's needed on the paint gun, guess I could pull it off the hose that feeds the garage if I want to paint before I get the last piece! 20220612_140709.jpg

So the backs been feeling a little better so I decided to try a small paint shoot, the doors & the laundry! the cloths line was fine, not really worried about dirt on these parts, the doors on the other hand have to be near perfect & that's where I failed, little nibs of dirt through the first 2 coats, got most of those out, just before shooting the 3rd coat I was going to blow the dust off & forgot to open the air line, so I pulled the trigger on the gun too much & blobbed specs of paint on one door, then when shooting the other door a big piece of dirt got in it & I messed up an area trying to get that out.
Was going to clear the small parts then thought of the cleanup for such a small shoot & decided to can that idea for the day, got the rough spots on the door done in 400 & will hit both complete doors with 600 before I shoot tomorrow (if the weather holds)
I need a booth!!!
Laundry's all blue! 20220614_142945.jpg
Sanded out all the dirt spots I could see...........20220614_143019.jpg
Before that most of them looked pretty good, oh well I hope tomorrow goes better? 20220614_143039.jpg

I've found that early morning is the best time for outdoor painting.
The last one I did in the driveway found me finishing the base coat around 6 AM.
An hour later, the clear was dry to the touch.
Aside from a few small dust nibs, the parts were almost booth-clean.

Now that its getting hot I was trying to get out early & finish the day in the air conditioned garage, but early for me is 10 or 11 am since I retired.
The real hot crap is coming, will have to go back to working hours , well the early half of them anyway!

More wasted paint, before I even had two passes done the first bug landed & dirt popped up here & there, got the bug out with no damage & finished off the 2nd coat of blue, the clear was a dirt magnet, so I stopped at 2 coats because I don't think a couple of them are coming out before I hit paint?

Looks good from 5' away.20220615_131210.jpg
These boogers are going to be the bigger problem! 20220615_131224.jpg
And then I did the no no, went back over the other black booger with some extra paint & made a big run area!!!!! I know better than that!!!!!
20220615_131356.jpg
At least I can call all the brackets & hinges done. 20220615_131320.jpg
So the new plan is to let them set a few days before sanding, then figure out a way to get these doors vertical to avoid at least half the dirt, these babies are heavy gotta call Rube for some ideas!

Maybe shoot in the garage if all else fails, but that's nasty on all my other stuff!

I want to shift back to the shell & get the outside of that done, at least that will be vertical for most of the painting.
If I disappear after tomorrow you will know I tried it & it didn't go well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did a little better today, I was hoping with the rain just ending this am that the things flying around would be less, did most of the painting with the parts on the vertical, still got some dirt, didn't see any bugs.
So now it depends on what coat there in if they will sand out?20220616_155630.jpg20220616_155655.jpg
Went with a painters correction to how I was shooting & went with lighter coats (sound familiar Resto)
So I thought after the 3rd coat a blue I had enough left to hit the trunk lid, so I dragged it out hung it up cleaned it off & got 2 coats on & ran out of blue, so I had to mix a bit more & that all delayed me getting to the clear!

On this I can only find 1 dirt blob, hopefully in the last coat!
20220616_155722.jpg
Roof is pretty good, see how good my body work is when I get it shinny, plenty little specs see what sands out?20220616_155853.jpg

I was spraying some parts last year in the driveway.
Nice calm Sunday morning. No traffic, very light breeze from the south, around 7 AM.
Good, right?

It was... until the city decided to mow the park next door. Just about ready for the 2nd coat of clear, and they show up.
Who else lives in a city where Parks & Rec mows on a Sunday????
