What are you working on?

Last few days have been crazy....getting the house ready for listing. Been running loads to dump/recycling, and all the little last minute details. Been up to 1am most nights working on stuff.Had the moving container taken out today, For sale sign went up, met with realtor to discuss listing price, photos and virtual tour done of the house. Now we have a couple days to kind of relax before getting the house ready for the open house on Saturday.

Cow, be prepared for multiple offers with no subjects (inspection, financing or subject to sale of their home)... Possibly over asking price, and as soon as the open house is over, or the next day. Real Estate has gone full-retard from Vancouver to Chilliwack and beyond.

I've been working on the same things, having just bought a house in a nice, quiet area of Chilliwack. Had to go subject free and over asking price to get it. On the bright side, since I bought it almost 2 months ago, the value has gone up. It was the most popular listing in Chilliwack for the week it was on MLS. I bought it the same day they had an open house, 1 day after it was listed...

In Chilliwack.

:hmmm:

So much work to be done. I'll start a picture show in the private section soon, of some of the little projects :)

Why can't the market be like that here, for my old house. :(

Because filthy rich Asians haven't decided to push the local populace out of their homes where you live.

As if the Baby Boom generation wasn't lucky enough before, now they have a great Retirement system in place. Sell their house for 5 times what they paid for it, from 1-2.5 million dollars or so, then move out to the boonies and live off of the remainder. Who cares about their children and grandchildren, anyway? There is no way for a regular Canadian born citizen to purchase a home for 2+ million in Vancouver. Displacement by replacement seems to be fine with everyone here. Bunch of Politically Correct retards in Canada.

TRUMP FOR PRIME MINISTER! :giggedy:

Working on a little bit of everything this weekend.

Swapped the snows for summer tires on the Montana van Saturday morning. Odds are pretty good we won't get any more snow this season... fingers crossed.

Pulled the Beetle out of the garage. I literally had to pull it out as it wouldn't crank. Traced the problem to a bad connection from the relay to the starter. The right rear signal light socket has been wonky for a while, so it got it's share of attention. Oil change, brake adjust and checked tire pressures so it's good to go for another summer. Mom needs to wash it. My part is done.

Fixed the trailer plug on the Montana, took a run downriver and picked up my trailer, brought it home and loaded it with $1100 of used Volvo parts and delivered them to their new owner.

Pulled the spare 1600 dual port VW engine from under the shelf, wired and fired it up then watched it get hauled away to its new home. It hadn't run in 9 years and fired as soon as the filter filled with gas. :) Sure was a lot of rust in them pea shooter tailpipes... the new owner coughed for ten minutes. Guess he should have stood somewhere else...

Put the new/old Caravan up on stands so tomorrow I can start replacing the outer rockers. Gave the brakes and steering a good inspection. Parts needed here...

Put up some new trellis beside the garden, so whenever the threat of frost is gone, the cucumber and tomato plants will have something to cling to. Got two new 6'x4' plastic trellis at an auction last fall. $20 for both. They look far better then the old three tine pitchforks I staked them to last year. ;)

Fired up my forge this afternoon and annoyed the neighbours. Who doesn't like the ringing sound of a hammer and anvil, or the pleasant aroma of bituminous coal smoldering on a Sunday afternoon?
Apparently, my neighbour's girlfriend and her besties don't.
Before they called the fire department on me I put out the fire and turned on the stereo and entertained them with the glorious sounds of Jim Reeves, Hank Snow, Lefty Frizzel and some God-awful mid-seventies Conway and Loretta whinyass country songs. I think George Jones was on that CD too...
I wonder if they still think I'm that hot guy that lives next door?

Took a drive north to Chambersburg PA to pick up another NP 435 for my truck. Time and space are at a premium in my little shop. So I thought I'd buy another, pick through it, rebuild what needed it, seal the whole thing up proper and chuck it in the truck when I pull mine out. That way, I don't have another dead immovable object in my bay while I wait for parts to make mine right after I pull it. Throw the one I pull out on Craigslist for the $150 I paid today, and Bob's yer uncle. I took the New Yorker up there because it's a nice drive through the mountains, and a great day for a hard top. The seller lost his mind when he saw what I pulled up in.. Got his whole family outside to see it.. I would've waited until his wife put on a bra and a full shirt, but a halter top and tube sock boobs it was. We threw all two tons of trans in the trunk, and away I went. Had to stop at a buddy's house on the way home because the Chrysler got a pinhole in the heater hose. Original hoses.. Go figure.

Turns out the trans was a hell of a deal.. Less than 75,000 miles on it.. Plastic guides are in the fork and everything. I'll just put some silly-cone on the front housing, and I'm good. Now I need to find a throwout bearing that won't break. Also need to weld up an attachment for my floor jack so I can hold the trans and transfer case stable when they come out.. I could go to Harbor Freight, but I think it speaks volumes that none of the floor models work right. Nor do I need to spend the money. image.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpeg

Finally got the chance to move the '72 Swinger from its resting place in Vancouver, all the way to Chilliwack. Haven't insured or driven the Swinger since this time in 2013, and she started right up. It drove at 70 mph for a little over an hour and everything seemed great, until I pulled off and stopped at the first red light in Chilliwack...

It was no longer running. Fired it back up and could only keep the Slant going by 2 footing the gas and brake, so drove the rest of the way with my butt cheeks clenched.

Next day it starts and idles fine, so I let it warm up until the choke comes off, and adjust the curb idle to a nice smooth idle (Holley 2bbl 2280). Drive no less than 2 miles down the road and it will not idle again. Had to run some errands for Mother's day shopping and each place we stopped, it would not idle when I restarted it.

I take it home, pull into the driveway to look over the motor, and it suddenly idles fine.

Not sure what the issue is, but I'm thinking vacuum leak, brake booster leak, weak coil or plugged needle valve in carb. I replaced the fuel filter and just a trace of black dirt came out of the old one when blowing it out backwards. Have not had time to drive it since, and am now back in Vancouver.

I guess next time I'll have to spray some carb cleaner on all the suspected vacuum leak areas and go from there?

iron...ive found it MUCH easier to "pull" the trans/tcase up...using an engine hoist in the cab..roll the carpet back and pull the trans tunnel cover...ive done it with and without an engine tilter..i dont see the need or benifit..honestly i think it was easier to just wrap it with a strap..and just pull it up into place..bolt in the cross member and leave the rest loose..remove picker and button it up with a simple floor jack

Keep in mind that you have 3 year old gas going thru that carb. The best thing for it would probably be to put some decent carb/injector cleaner in the tank and give it a good workout.

Thanks, I will give that a try :)

I would periodically run the car for 15-20 minutes at a time after adding fresh gas (once every 3-4 months), and if I remember correctly, added stabil to the fuel a couple years ago and last year as well. When replacing the fuel filter this morning, the gas didn't smell bad. Also filled the tank after arriving in Chilliwack, so there is half a tank of fresh and half a tank of older fuel.

Tried increasing the idle using the idle screw, and it didn't make much of a difference. There is an exhaust leak where the intake mates with the exhaust manifold, and thinking that might be an issue too. She runs beautifully when the accelerator is pushed past 1/4 of the way. Lots of power and such. :hmmm:

Idle circuit is plugged. :hmmm: The idle circuit is very small and the most minute bit of scum can cause blockage. If it does occasionally idle correctly there is some hope of the carb cleaner getting it out, otherwise you'll need to tear the carb apart.

Would that I could. That's an excellent idea, unfortunately my trans tunnel is welded in. I've only got the shifter holes for the trans and T case to work through. If it's not welded, I'm going to feel like a tool for cutting mine when I did the 4 speed swap

i forgot they were stupid and welded that on the 80s trucks but left it a bolt in on the 70s

I'll try the easy fix with carb cleaner first. Heading back to Chilliwack tomorrow night, and will give the old beast some loving in the morning.

Will also try fixing the Dodge :toot:

Get a bottle of Lucas 10020 fuel-system cleaner. One of the more effective cleaners available.

However, I'm liking the vacuum-leak theory. That's exactly what it sounds like to me.

Thanks, Jass. Still haven't had time to work on the Swinger, but will have a bit of time tomorrow :-)

On a side note, does anyone have a line on a pushrod for a manual disk master cylinder? Next project is getting rid of the vacuum booster to get some brake pedal feel going.

I know I haven't got any that specifically came from an A-body, but I have two NOS F-body pushrods and a used version of same, as well as the one from my Challenger. The Challenger will probably get the upgrade to an aluminum F-body style cylinder, but I'm not sure which pushrod (if any of the ones I have) will be the one I need. Let me do some checking, because I may end up having to use an MP "adjustable" one (P5249316AB) or something similar. It's not inexpensive, but it's brake-related and has the added benefit of allowing some adjustment to the pedal height.

You may be able to reuse the bolt that retains the power booster's linkage to the pedal itself, or you may need a new shoulder bolt. There's an O-ring on the shoulder that prevents the pushrod from rattling. Mancini Racing sells one for $11 USD (their numberAR031) , but I'm sure it's available elsewhere if you need it.

Thanks for the info, Jass. I have a manual disk, '73 A-body master cylinder on the way, and will see exactly what arrives in the box.

As for the idling issue, I sprayed carb cleaner down the throttle body and through a couple little ports while running, changed the fuel filter and replaced a questionable rubber vacuum cap. It ran beautifully for a 15-20 minute drive to Canadian tire, but when we came out 15 minutes later, it took a few extra cranks to start and barely idled. Very lean, and any carb adjustment would show no obvious change in idle quality. I covered the throttle body with my hand and it would idle perfectly before cutting out from lack of air.

So seems like a lack of fuel at idle. I ordered a carb kit for the Holley 2280, which itself is only 5 years old. Will replace all vacuum caps as well as replacing the leaking exhaust manifold and manifold to intake gaskets.

BINGO, you just did an old mechanics trick to determine what the problem was. Partially choking it with your hands compensates for excess air that is leaking in thru a vacuum leak. Get a spray can of starting fluid and spray at any possible vacuum leak areas to find where it is. And if you don't find any, don't forget the vacuum advance. That is an internal leak possibility. Just pull the hose off and block it to test.
