Rusty's not very quiet cuda progress

OK real close on that fender, can't see it in the pics but I left the guide coat on the body lines till I mount it up & make sure they match with enough material for some slight adjustments, front dropoff arc looks a little off tome, when I mount it I'll check the other side & see how that looks?

another low showed up on the top, a little further forward than my putty spot took about all the material I put on to get it out & caused another slight break through to the z-chrome.

next time out I'll mount it up & see what I got, then if there's still some decent weather i'll start strippin the other fender.

2 70* days & no primer shot, got most of the outside off yesterday, finished off the nooks & crannies today. I forgot how bad this fender was, it will be a lot of putty work, even went around the back on any thing connected to the skin, don't want to leave anything that could creep around to the front!!!!!!!!

of course I found another spot to patch, head light area, saw a bubble & punched right through what was once 2 layers of metal.

I'm still toying with the idea of bringing in the new fenders, just gotta put some cash together, aint easy these days!

25% off at Year One until midnight tonight (10/15/14)... WED15. Just posting it in case you're about 25% short of buying new ones.

After a dental marathon ending in a rather large bridge I'm 25% short of the first 25%, between that, an couple of year upgrade on the kids pick up & the wife's knee surgery(which I haven't gotten the bills for yet ) my only hope is the expenses will net me a little tax relief, well I guess I'm lucky business finally picked up this year, otherwise we'd be movin back in with the folks!

paints not gonna happen this year, so next spring if there's a few bucks laying around I can bring those in & see how far I got with the basket cases, the other car needs quarters, at least one fender, roof & a few small parts, engine rebuild if I don't just go crate , that's why this one was going on the block, finance the next build, at the rate I'm going the kids will have to deal with the mess I leave back there!

Wow, those go back to the early days, not sure if it's scatpack or the early nuts, have to check next time out there, there all curled up, covered in all kinds a nasty dust!

They go back to Scatpack days. Sixpacker printed them up. That pic of my R/T was taken in his driveway when jr & I drove the R/T up to Nova scotia to meet.

Was just out there, it's 03 scatty cal.
So another 70* day, got done work early, just went over the whole fender with an eastwood cleaning disc, scotch brite on the small areas, put on the gloves & put the fender out in the sun to warm up, mixing the z-chrome now, will just shoot what I have left, should get me a good couple a coats, think I will do a light 180 sanding to show me the really bad stuff & then any warm days I can work the rage filler, if I'm lucky get it sealed with urethane before it gets too cold, can do my heaters in the garage, really trying not to shoot in there though makes a big mess!

after seeing how bad the fender is I decided to go back to 100 grit, been sanding for 2 hours & still some material to remove before I putty , figure if I show some metal at the highs that's about as good as the lows will be......................

mounted it up to check the lines, taped opposite the side that needs the most putty.............................

Back to sanding!

Took a chance & put on the second coat a putty today, set it out in the sun, dried ok, sanded till dark, gets there pretty early now.
next time out try & work the body line, really faded at the toughest spot, above the wheel well, once I get that done I can urethane the whole thing, if I don't get a warm day I'll do the heat up the garage ordeal.

Sanded out the putty, was 65 in the pm so I shot the urethane, got 4 coats on, see if I can get the guide coat on tomorrow, if time sand a little, looks like after that it's fri or sat before it's nice again.

Well watching me may be your first mistake :( but yes black will show more , a good metal worker could have gotton most of that out, the top was near all my patch work, don't know why I didn't pull a little more on the sides, those spots did get somewhat smaller after I took most of the primer off, gonna shoot my guide coat in a while, might have some time to sand a bit later today, gonna go babysit my new (first) grand son  for a couple of hours around noon.
You'd think I might have learned something after doing this 3 or 4 times(on the same damn car!) but I already have another issue down by the rocker I redid, post that up later see if resto can figure out what I did wrong??????????

So here's the mess up, just happened to look down when I was covering the car, nice crack in my work, I think my base was weld through primer after metal work was done, then I think I hit it with urethane, then putty work. looks like there's gray with a little putty in the hole & some gray stuck on the chunk that came out, now this is right at the seam for the quarter & the putty gets thick there?????????

To me, it looks like a simple case of a lack of adhesion. The underlying metal looks ok in the pic - hard to tell. Can you get a better picture or two?

I've said it before: In all my years of bodywork - going on over 30 years now - I've learned what works and what doesn't work in the real world. Weld-through primers are great for industrial apps and maybe for where top-coats will be low millage, like floors, rad support panels, etc, but on vehicle exterior surfaces... no.
As a temporary measure of protection its alright, but remove it all before going on the next step.
Working outside is a challenge I know, and you've got to keep stuff from rusting. I went through 10 or 12 cans of etch primer spray bombs when doing DCF's Charger, trying to keep everything protected until I could get some proper primer on it. But, spay bomb primers of any kind are only temporary.

Another nice day here, 65 & sunny thought I had it, but hit metal in a couple of small spots.................

was leaving all the material on the body lines that meet the door till it was hung for fine tuning, now it will get a couple more coats..................

intended to shoot 2 coats, well I mixed a bit much so it got 3. if I don't mess up the edges again should finally be done with this one, hopefully tomorrow I'll have it sanded out & hung to do the body lines, too bad I can't just shoot over this.....................

Was doing pretty good, sanding went well, used the same 400 from yesterday so it would come off slower, left a few tiny dots, hopefully enough material to give it a quick rough up before paint & remove the last dots.
so I mount it up to work the body lines, that's where I called it a day, has to come out a tad & down a tad at the door, my patch mounting hole has to be opened up a little more, the down I don't know how I'll accomplish that?????????? that took the heart outta me, didn't feel like dragging out a bunch more tools, so she sits till my next adventure!
