Rusty's not very quiet cuda progress

I agree with Nodda... do the hood in Organasol, and I'd suggest the header panel, tops of the fenders & doors to match per the AAR treatment. Make it look intentional.

Holy shit! That sucks! Hope the rest of the car doesn't fallow.

I like Jass's AAR idea!

Don, didn't know I was going to start yet, next weekend I get off after easter we will get together.
Guys, it will be major, with all the minor defects in the paint & por 15 under everything but the doors & trunk lid the whole thing is coming back down, just can't take the chance of repainting only for more problems to arise.
My problem is now it's work, work I really would rather not do, have to force myself to go out there, maybe now that I started I can get back into it, but the hearts not in it , just so damn depressing!
Haven't even untarped the 74 in over a year, I'm afraid to look at how far that mess has progressed, maybe if I can get the 73 done & out of here my outlook for the 74 may improve??????????????????

Very understandable, Rusty. You've already done so much work on this one, it's got to be hard to have it need to be done again... especially after you tried so hard to do it right the first time, only to have this happen. Maybe I'm lucky that the LeBaron ended up in the scrap heap, because I was headed down the same road with "magic paints" on that project. Add to that the fact that it wasn't valuable enough to warrant the work I was doing from a resale standpoint and I didn't love the car enough to do it twice, and depressing as it was I may have gotten off easily by having to junk it.

That sucks Rusty. :(
It's never fun re-doing something.

I'll PM you my number... any time you've got a question about how to approach something in the re-do, give me a call. I can walk you through it all.
The phone call might cost a buck or two, the advice will be free. :)

Mike

Well unless I get some time during the week, won't even see it till the week after easter, think I'll keep after the hood, then try & get a coat of primer on it to hold it a while, then start pulling the front end apart, pretty sure fenders have to come off to make the repairs near the back bolts(where the double metal was for the inner support) out back hope just the bumper & filler ends?
Mom's alone now, so I'm over there almost every weekend at least for a few hours, mostly Saturdays now, but as the weather gets hotter & I work some sat am's I'll be going sundays, doesn't leave much car time, but works not crazy either, so I may be able to steal a weekday here & there?

Yo Resto, what do you think of Z crome primer, rust defender I think, got a gallon from charger man, he used it on his charger(painted right after mine & is just fine up to now? )

Z Chrome from Klassen's in New Jersey?
AWESOME stuff!
It's a polyester primer, so once applied it shouldn't be left uncovered for too long.
Fantastic build characteristics, will lock down anything underneath (you can apply it over 40 grit scratches and never worry about seeing them ever again) and can be applied direct to bare steel.
I prefer it over any other polyester primer I've ever used, but it's hard to get over here.
It does develop a bit of a shell when it dries, but for block sanding... there is nothing better.
When you're ready to use it, stir the crap out of it - it tends to settle in the can - and then stir it again.
Use a gun with at least a 2.0 tip and go slow when spraying. No dry mists or anything less than full wet coats, don't worry about runs or drips.

Oh, and it stinks... :)

I'll get what's on the label for you when I get close to shooting, I know it's thick I mixed it for a LONG time when I put a little on the C pillar to hold till I decided what to do.
No miracle drugs this time around! Thanks, Rich.

What to you mean by "a shell" ?

What to you mean by "a shell" ?
Some primers, as they cure, form a slightly softer top surface. Makes sanding a little easier.
Primers with a shell are fewer everyday, most people don't like the tough surface. The shell-like top surface of Z Chrome requires a little more effort to cut through, but it's really not a big issue unless the guy sanding is a wuss. ;)

Man rusty sorry to see the issues the paint has developed. Can you buy yourself a cheap(er) mopar you can drive and enjoy while you redo the cuda? I did this when I restored my 68 Coronet convertible. I was so pi$$ed about how much money the body and paint cost me, that I shoved the car under a cover and locked the garage for over a year. Bought my survivor 73 340 roadrunner to enjoy in the mean time. It sure helped me through that rough patch.

Good luck on the redo regardless!

I could put some parts back on the 74 & cruise the RAT rod around awhile, the insurance is the problem , cost is more than my charger, so for now I drive the charger on the weekends.
The 73 runs pretty good, except for the melting igi. box(which still works) I may insure it a few months this summer, my son wants to drive it, now that may give me a heart attack![smilie=2:
Might drive it around in primer with some 4sale signs & see if there's any interest, well that's if I ever get it into primer! :naughty:

I'm getting old, had a few hours so I forced myself out there & started grinding away at the hood, after bout 3 hours my arms were screaming for mercy, boy am I out of shape.
Anyway got a bit more than half done, uncovered the spots on the fenders where it creeped up to the top, after the top of the hood is clean I think I'll remove the front end stuff, bumper grille & headlight stuff at the minimum will have to come off, so I can pull the fenders.
Well at least I got started, now the trick will be to keep at it, little by little????????????????

I might have an interested party... ill call you over the weekend about it.

sent from outter space using mental telepathy.

Hmmmm now that sounds interesting, but will he pay bout 15K for a partly done clone????????????????????????????????????????

I told him its a 318 car with a 360 in it and also told him 20-25k. Showed him a couple pics and he seems interested.

Pics with paint, a bit different now, hey if he wants to take a look see we can set it up. What can it hurt cept what little is left of my pride!

K so I had some time today, got the heavy grinding done, gonna switch to 80 grit & just hit a few spots where the por15 actually stuck
then it's wire wheels to work the air grilles at the back & the edges around the hood scoop. should wrap that up today, then I have to start takin the front end apart so the fenders can come off.
At least I'm on it again, see how long that lasts! :shifty:

All this was caused by POR15? If it is, this is why I hate the stuff. Great stuff until water gets under it....and it will eventually. Then the nightmare starts.

I feel for you....not fun having to redo all that hard work. :(
