72 Challenger R/T/A

Well the deal on the hood is off. The guy is refunding my money through Paypal and I'll just have to keep my eyes open for another one later. This one just wasn't ment to be I guess.

My car is in the shop now and I got a vauge secondhand report about it's condition from my friend. His dad said that it will need floors and quarters but I wasn't told how much of them or the extent of the rust. I'm going to try to call him myself and get a first hand report. While I'm at it I'll ask Mark (my friends dad) if he can take some pics of the areas that need attention. When I get them, I'll post them here.

I talked to Mark again and he gave me a list of the stuff that needs attention to get the car back into shape.

Floorpans
-Driver side: Patch small holes F&R (EDIT: I replaced the whole floor.)
-Pass side: Patch holes in front pan and replace rear pan (EDIT: I replaced the whole floor on this side too.)
Trunk
-Pan: patch small holes (EDIT: I replaced the entire trunk floor and both drop offs and outer wheelhouses with new parts.)
-Pass rear subframe rail: Patch small holes (EDIT: The rotted section will be replaced with the front box for the MP 3" spring relocation kit.)
Quarter panels
-Driver side: Replace from mid-body line down (EDIT: Done!)
-Pass side: Patch lower edge from wheel to bumper (EDIT: Done!! I put a whole quarter panel on this side too.)
Fenders
-Driver side: Replace. (nothing left to work with behind headlights) (EDIT: Replaced with new fiberglass fender.)
-Pass side: Patch lower edges (EDIT: Replaced with new fiberglass fender.)
Hood: Straighten passenger side edge (done) and patch some small holes (EDIT: Straightened it but no patches. T/A hood is replacing it anyway.)
Trunk lid: Patch rear edge

My friend back in MS has a decent set of 70-71 fenders that I may be able to get cheap. I'll know later this week for sure. I'll probably just get 70-71 half quarter panel repops for the back half. Anyone have suggestions for a good source for those? I'm not going to do this car up for a concourse resto so anything under the carpet (except the pass rear pan) and in the trunk is just going to get sheet metal patches as needed rather than a whole new pan for now. I'll re-do that stuff right when I get back to the states in a couple of years (late 2006 or early 2007?). I'm going to have Mark shoot it with a flat black primer/sealer after the body is back together. I still am going to do the 70 tail panel/lights after I get back home (US) so I don't want to invest in the good paint yet.

On a side note, I bought a complete '75 440 and BB TF727 from someone off of bigblockdart.com and just had it delivered Friday. I'll get the bodywork finished and the 318 running first before I try to tackle that project. I am going to build the stroker motor at the beginning of this thread using this iron 440 block and get it running that way first. Then I'll transfer all the guts over when I'm able to get an aluminum block ($$$$$).

I recently won an Ebay auction for another TA hood in much better shape. It is the same Unlimited Products DC-708 type hood as the last one I bid on. The shipping shouldn't be a problem this time (I hope :helpme: ). The seller already has a US flatrate shipping fee set that is better than what I was going to pay to ship the other hood. Here's a few pics of it.

I should have a price for the 70-71 fenders from my friend next week. He forgot that I needed a pair and needs to look at the other set he has to decide which ones he wants to get rid of. Either set I get, I'll be money ahead getting decent fenders for Mark to work on instead of having him try to repair my rotten ones.

I spoke with my friend in MS about the fenders again and he still hasn't come up with a price yet for me. He was talking about either $100 each or $500 each. I'm not quite sure what he wants for them yet. I think he's been seeing what some E-body stuff is going for lately and is starting to try to get in on the action. I hope he will let me have them for $100-$250 each. If he wants around $400-$500, I'll just wait for the Goodmark repops.

BTW, I just called and checked with Goodmark (20 April 05) to see how their new E-body fenders were coming. They had to get the first samples of the Challenger fenders retooled. They should be available sometime around late June or early July 05 for $499.95 each. The Cuda fenders should be the same price but they are still scheduled closer towards the end of the year (2005) before they'll be ready. (EDIT: It's 1 June 06 and they still aren't out yet :( )

The T/A hood still hasn't shipped yet and I'm getting a bit concerned. I sent the payment a week ago and haven't heard from the guy since. I've e-mailed the guy again to find out why the hood hasn't been shipped yet and when it will be going out. I hope this guy isn't going to turn out to to be a scammer. :wtf: :naughty:

After talking with Mark, The progress has been slow on my Chally. He had a couple of insurance job cars come in so my Chally got put on the back burner for a bit. He's made some progress patching the trunk but hasn't gotten much further than that. The July finish date has been pushed back to a more realistic August or September timeframe.

He still needs to look at the wiring to try to get the 318 to fire up. I haven't decided if the 440 will get redone and thrown in before I ship the car down here or not. I really want to, but that would possibly push the completion date back even further and I'm trying to get the car shipped before it starts to snow over there in PA.

I've asked Mark if he can get me some pics of the areas needing attention as well as some shots of his work so far. He will also try to get some pics of the 440 and 727 and email them to me as well. He told me he's not too computer savvy so it may take a while to get them to me.

Well, I haven't posted here in a while due to computer issues (can't log on at work anymore), moving my workplace and my house to the San Juan Metro area lately. Anyway, I finally kinda, sorta, mostly fixed my internet connection problems and most of the moving is done so I can stay in touch with y'all and get back to buggin Mark about the progress on the R/T/A.

The T/A hood showed up a while ago and Mark said it looked fine last time I talked to him :giggedy: .

I've started putting Autometer gauges in the '70 dash I picked up in MS. So far I have the Water Temp gauge in place and I have to order the rest. I'm using the Phantom gauges except for the tach which will be an 8K 2-5/8" Ultralight Silver type one. They don't make any 2-5/8" Phantom tachs.

I called Goodmark to see if they had any word on the repop chally fenders. They are now saying they should be done by the end of the year :liar: . I haven't been able to get in contact with my friend in MS about the fenders he has. I've pretty much given up on him. I've decided to just go back to my original plan to use FG parts and just deal with the extra prep work they require. I might as well get the FG valance panel, front bumper, rear bumper, decklid and rear valance panel while I'm at it so I can consolidate the shipping cost into one bill. I'm gonna hold off on the FG doors until I can get back to the states cause that's a project I definately want to tackle myself.

I'll post more after I hear back from Mark about the progress so far.

Wow, what a project you have here good luck hope it turns out good. Can't wait to see the end product. Send some pics of the progress in the shop. [smilie=e:

Even a resto-nut like me can get excited about restifying that Challenger.

Once the original engine is gone, I'm on the modding boat too! Really!

And...for the record...even though I'm one of those resto-nuts, I still drive my car to every show that's close by my house

Good luck withe the project! Any chance we might get to see a new 6.4 hemi in it? (Is it 6.4...the big one? HOW MANY FRIGGIN INCHES IS THAT???)

I may have to wait till next month to get some new pics to post. I was planning on taking a week off to go over there sometime next month and finally see my cars in person for the first time.

I'm about ready to order up a 500 ci stroker kit from www.440source.com for my 440. I need to call them to find out the shipping costs and delivery time. I'd like to have it there before I go to PA in Sept. If I have Mark send the 440 to the machine shop now I should be able to get it back before I get there. The machine shop will need the pistons from the kit to get the bores sizes right so I'm gonna have to get it there soon. That way I can build the stroker myself while I'm there. Maybe I'll be able to stop by NJ and see if I can look up Rusty and some of the other NJ nuts too.

For the heads, I am leaning towards the Indy "Little EZ" heads with this engine instead of the Eddy's but I'm still doing a bit of reasearch on them first. For what I expect out of the engine, the Eddys will just about be at their limit while the Indy's will just be starting to breathe. I have to think long term so I don't have to replace the heads if I want to bump the engine output up some more later (huffer maybe [smilie=i: ).

No new or old Hemi for this car. I've always been a Wedge fan. I think I heard someone say that 6.4 Ltr was 426 Ci. I haven't checked to see if he was right though.

Well I didn't get the 500 ci kit..... I'm getting a 512 ci kit instead  . When I called to order the kit I asked the sales guy if the new longer stroker cranks were in yet (4.25 & 4.35 vs the 4.15). The 4.25 crank is getting there next week :giggedy:. Even though this crank has a longer stroke, the big ends are smaller 2.20" Chebby rod sized. It works out to need about the same amount of clearancing as the 4.15 crank with the larger Chrysler rod ends. When I get in contact with Mark (is he hiding from me? :wtf: ) I need to have him check the bores on my 440 so I can send in the size to get the custom pistons cut for the block. I also need to pick a cam so I can let them know what ratio I want for the stainless rocker arm kit I got with it. Hopefully 4-6 weeks later when the pistons are done, the whole bundle should go out to Mark's place. If the machine shop can get the block prepped in a decent amount of time I may be able to assemble the engine around late September.

I still need to order heads, roller cam, intake, carb, ingition box, distributor, headers and...um... :shifty: more stuff  . All this will hopefully all get to the shop in time for me to have it there in time to assemble the engine while I'm in town.

BTW: Anyone know some good links to decent fiberglass companies? All my links got deleted when they moved my computer to the new place. I'm still looking for some halfway decent fenders for the R/T/A.

More to come later.....

Wow! That will be some impressive! Look forward to hearing it run....vacation time? [smilie=e:

Let us know when you'll be in the neighborhood, and we'll see if we can set something up. Greg340 and I are on the Pa/NJ border, and Rusty is about 60 miles east. Plum Crazy is about 1 hour south. So there are a few of us in the area. Scared yet? [smilie=2:

The stroker sounds like a nice build. You will want to be sure to have the block all machined so that you know the bore and deck height. This is if you with to keep the compression in Pump gas area.

The Indy EZ heads look impressive, it all depends how you want the engine to perform. I may be doing the same for my stroker build.

TTi 2 inch headers would work good with that combo.

Thanks Kam, those were the two I was looking for.

The machining will be handled (hopefully) before I get there by a local shop. I'm still shooting for late September to get up there and work on the engine and maybe chase a few nuts down.

The stroker kit options I ordered were:
- Ross custom pistons
- Clevite 77 "V" bearings
- Childs & Albert Zreo Gap rings
- Billet I-beam rods w/ARP 2000 bolts
- 4340 hard chrome .990" pins

Since they offer free shipping on anything that gets ordered at the same time as the stroker kit I got a few other things from them as well:
- Billet Stainless Steel SFI Damper
- Billet 3 bolt 9 way adj. timing chain set w/ torrington bearing for roller cams
- Stainless Roller Rockers with shafts (still need to pick ratio based on cam choice)
- Billet Steel Main Caps
- ARP Main Stud Kit for Billet Steel Main Caps
- Melling M-63HV High Volume Oil Pump
- Stainless Steel Freeze Plug Kit

I'm still waiting on a call back from Comp Cams for a cam recommendation. Based on that info I'll make a determination on the rocker ratio and the stall choice. I still have a bunch of parts to track down yet so stay tuned.

Yesterday I was replying with another parts haul update when the internet nazis on the base started snooping around my computer [smilie=f: . They locked out the IP for Moparnuts.com so now I can only get online here at home :wall: [smilie=k: . What really sucks was I had just finished typing an extensive (long) reply on this topic when they pulled the plug  .

I really don't feel like typing all that junk again so I'll just give you the quick version:
From Indy Cylinder Head:
Indy 440-SR Kit
Indy 440-2 single plane Max Wedge intake
Comp Cams 509SW w/hyd. lifters
BG 850cfm Mighty Demon
TTI 2" ceramic coated E body step headers
From Unlimited Products:
left and right front fenders
left and right headlight buckets
front gravel pan

The pistons will be .055 over and the rocker ratio will be 1.6 for the stuff coming from 440 Source.

let me know how the 440source parts are. im looking at getting a stroker kit some time in the next year after i paint my car. sounds like a really interesting, involved project and i am looking forward to hearing/seeing progress. good luck with it. [smilie=e:

I'll be in PA next month to check on my car. I will get a good look at the kit and hopefully be able to get it assembled while I'm there (machine shop permitting). I'll post pics and a report when I get back.

I just got a Dyno Sim Pro Tools CD yesterday. I loaded it and am running an extensive sim set on it (1,084,402 sims). The baseline for my combo using the data I could find for the cam, carb, heads, bore and stroke put the engine at around 650hp and 680ft/lbs. When its done with the sims it will have checked a bunch of different cam (and other stuff) configurations looking for ways to make more power. This is only a guide though and until I can find all the missing data it's requesting I can't really nail down any real solid numbers for it.
