70 Sport Satellite build

The rule here is anything 68-79 only has to pass a sniffer and have a gas cap. Original emission equipment doesn't have to be intact on those years, so it's pretty easy to pass.

After we finished the car yesterday, Dave invited me to bring the car back over the winter to pull the engine & trans for a re seal and detail job, steam clean and detail the underside of the car, plus prep & shoot the engine bay, trunk, and jambs. Having a motivated pal who has a big shop is a huge motivator for me while I'm garageless.[smilie=::

oh hell yeah having the space and the help makes a world of differance

sounds like a fairly painless smogging then

Business has had me running like a man possessed lately, but I did manage to change the motor mounts on the car, and put my rusty old Cragars on for a different look. I enjoy being able to switch the looks of the car back and forth. I haven't abandoned the steelies & caps, just changing it up for a while. A good tuneup is in order now.

The steelies & poverty caps went back on, because one of the Cragars wouldn't hold air, regardless of the tire installed. Today, after way too long, I put tags & insurance on the car. On it's first trip to town, which is only ten minutes, it did nice. I have an odd valve train noise at part throttle, and an odd vibration at 50-55 mph, but otherwise acted perfect. No heat issues (near 100 today), no brake issues, just the vibration & engine noise. I'll pull the valve covers tomorrow & make sure the shafts are tight, plus install my vintage M/T covers. As for the vibration, I guess the u joints come first, and if that doesn't do it, have the wheels re balanced.

Pulled the valve covers, checked the shafts, then turned the engine over to put each cylinder on and off the cam, and all appears tight. I'll see if my GoPro camera can pick up the valvetrain noise. Maybe one of you can help diagnose it. As for the vibration, the u joints are tight, as is the input yoke on the tranny, so off to get the wheels balanced. The M/T valve covers seal much better than the stock ones.:)

im a FIRM beliver in aluminum covers..they seal soooooo much better

as for vibes....well...has it always done it or is it a new thing?

forget the gopro for finding noise unless the car is crazy quiet..mine doesnt pickup shit for quality sound but a buzzzzzzzzz unless the sounds are that of "normal" indoor voices

The car went to town today for the August Nights kickoff show. I decided to go a bit early and get a good workout. After an hour and a half in the gym, I went to start the car, and it acted flooded. Would only start with throttle wide open, and didn't want to clear out, definitely fouled the plugs. I managed to limp it down to the Peppermill, park it where I can get to it with the trailer, and had a buddy drive me home. I'm guessing the float is sticking in the carb. Anything else I could be missing?

Fuel is boiling out of the carb and flooding out the motor. Think a lot of this problem stems from the crappy blended fuel we have to run. This modern fuel is designed for high pressure EFI systems, not the old trickle flow carb's.

This morning I changed the fuel filter, which due to it's location, isn't helping matters. It's down low by the pump, and with manifolds, is an ideal location. With the headers, however, it's percolating. Relocate fuel filter, one problem solved. After that, I changed the carb to a known reliable AFB, then pulled the plugs expecting them to be fouled. The plugs looked just fine, so I reinstalled them, and fired the car. It ran fine, but still wanted to load and die at idle. That's when I remembered to check the fuel pump. My buddy pulled the line while I cranked the engine, and sure enough, the pump, which is the original unit, was barely working. Why didn't I think to check that sooner? Soo...it looks like a new fuel pump will put the car back in business.:)

The new fuel pump is on, and the fuel filter is now relocated away from header heat. I've driven the car to town and back now several times in varying heat, and it has been perfectly reliable for the 20 mile round trip each time.
Now for the bad news. I have a couple of business projects which require more cash than I have on hand, so I really have no other option than to sell the car. I really like this car, and never had any intention of selling it, but the times dictate otherwise. Not too long ago, getting a small bus. loan or private funding with a well thought out business plan was no problem, but today, nada.:( This is a good car, so if anyone knows anyone interested, let me know, and I'll flood them with pics.

Mixed emotions here. The Sport Satellite sold. I got what I wanted, but still can't shake the feeling I'm making a huge mistake. It will be headed for Europe next week.

your going to be kicking the shit out of yourself for that..but youve got all that formula S stuff still right?...build it!

i was really REALLY close to being in your woods last night....was allready all over CA but was a chance of me picking up an engine and driving a ferarri in reno

I've come to realize that I enjoy the pre 68 Mopars much more, and I still have the 4 speed 65 Satellite, so it's time to get crackin' on it. I have the full interior for it, plus a nice 440 core to build. For that, I already have ported heads, M1 intake, new clutch, MSD billet distributor & 6al box, new cam, lifters, springs, retainers, locks, timing set, and oil pump. At this point, it won't be a terribly expensive build. After that car is finished, I'll get moving on building the big block Formula S.

Sorry to hear that the 70 Satty is leaving....but you have to do what's right for you.

A 65 Satty is nothing to scof at either...and then a big block Formula S...sounds like a couple fun cars......When you starting a build thread on those ones...;)
