Rusty's not very quiet cuda progress

Todays check, no leaks (yet)but the pressure did bleed off over night?
Put the jack stands in the garage but couldn't force myself to jack it up & test from the cable up.
Only one more mild day it's tomorrow or next heat wave!

Forced myself to start on the speedo problem, jacked up the back & got just enough room to get under & loosen the cable at the tranny, could not get either one of my drills to catch the cable, after hunting around & trying to find a way to grab it I finally got a small pointy vice grip on it, turning but hand I got a couple of tiny blips out of the speedo, my bigger drill was able to get on the vice grip, I closed my eyes & prayed that it wouldn't fly out of my hands when I triggered the drill, to my surprise it ran rather smoothly! whew, dodged a bullet there. Butttttt nothing at the speedo.

So somehow I wormed my old body under there & again to my surprise I got my hand all the way up the cable, now something did feel loose , when I shook the cable last time nothing moved at the connection.
Finally got it off & found this20241231_150431.jpgNow with it out the cable slides both ways pretty easy20241231_150553.jpgwhen I pushed it back in a ton more stuck out at the bottom, that I could have gotten the drill on! 20241231_150501.jpg20241231_150614.jpgSO I'm hoping & praying I didn't break that right now & it was the problem all along, did not see any chunks of plastic in the car!

The first thing I looked at was the tranny fitting, to me it sure looks round I hope that's not bad too?
hard to get a close up tranny linkage in the way, I zoomed on a couple? 20241231_142208 zoom.jpg20241231_142212.jpg20241231_142601 zoom.jpg20241231_142601.jpg

OK couple of questions, do I have to pull & measure the cable or is it a part I can order with mod & eng/tranny combo ?

Second, this gets pulled out from the eng bay correct?

Gonna go search for a cable now.

At classic the OER # 3592360 shows a wrench type nut at the tranny, all the others I see it's a round fitting, not sure if the round are the same thread size 57 bucks

Same Part # on amazon 35, but that has the round nut.
Amazon also has a Slakerbe ????? replacement for the part # for 25 also round nut at tranny.

I hate this, I miss you Jass!!!

Save your searching for other things. There may just be a simpler & easier fix. The connection for the speedo head is broken with a chunk missing, which allowed the cable end to not fully engage. What you need to do is find an epoxy that will bond the white plastic connector to the cable housing. First I would spray some carb cleaner around the missing portion to remove any lube. Then use a product from Loctite called "Extreme Glue". Loctite Extreme Glue Gel Available at many stores like Walmart. Get the gel version and lay on several layers to fill the gap. It needs about 24 hrs to fully cure per layer. It is the best I've found to bond plastics, vinyls, ABS plastic & the type. I've used it a few times to repair cracked motorcycle windshields, which Super Glues won't adhere to. It may be best to pull the cable out so that you don't accidently bond that to the housing.

If you've never used that Extreme Glue before, you'll be impressed by what it can do.

Never have & never have tried this type of repair, time will tell!
Might help me on my HO train projects, I buy junk lots of engines to tinker with & then resell, usually for a small loss but now that the cars pretty much done It will be my main keep me busy hobby!

Saving 60 bucks on the car at this point is pretty much a joke, but it's something to do!

Being the child of a depression era parents, like yourself, we grew up learning how to be frugal. And being from the midwest and being from a family raised by sharecroppers, we had to learn to make do with little of nothing. To me that speedo cable fix is a no-brainer. When Ihave something break I ask myself, "How can I fix this?" And also, "How can I make this better?"

Yea, I like to fix things too, tried to instill some of those values in my sons, at least they are all hard workers, as for fixing things maybe 2 out of the 3, but 3 does well enough to pay others to do the fixing so I can live with that.
A lot of the young people I encounter are pretty much useless!

A too large portion of todays population have become members of the "throw-away" generation. As soon as something breaks or is "outdated" they replace because "newer is supposed to be better". But usually it's not, As we witness way too often today.

Got the garage warm enough to bear for a while, pulled the cable cleaned the sleeve & the connector with electric contact cleaner, & found a punch that fit the hole nicely.
Put some glue on the sleeve & slid the connector on, tried to match the indented circles on the cable, put a bead on the end & then put a layer into the big gap! stuck on a clamp.
If I haven't glued my tools in I'm thinking of coating most of the connector & filling the gap more & running it down the sleeve a bit?

You've got the right idea. That Extreme Glue sticks to everything. If any of it seeps through you might even glue your punch in. :ROFLMAO:

The weather looks too cold for at least a week or so, now I'm itching to finish it & see if the thing works & nothing else is wrong!

K started up the heater if I can at least get it up to 50ish I'll put the next coat on, punch slid out easy & the one I was worried about, the vise grips also released without damage.
I'll go out about 3 & see if she warmed up a bit, it's 29* now?

Well it wasn't exactly toasty out there, maybe made 45* I took a chance & put the coat on anyway.

Gonna be a while till this weather breaks so I brought this in to do in the house, I can paint in the basement & build on the kitchen table! 20250106_161605.jpg

Managed to get the garage up to 50 or so, checked the repair on the cable connector & it looked & felt pretty strong.
So I wormed this ole body under there again, shot some WD40 in the sleeve & then slid the cable in.
Left a lot out on the speedo end & just put the cable in till I felt it "slide" into the slot, then pulled the connector up & snapped that on.
Hooked up the drill & oh my nothing happened!!!!!!
Oh my lord, then it hit me try reversing the drill & wa la I was going 20!
Hit the ground & wormed in as far as I could, only problem was I could only use my left useless hand, took me till frozen fingers before I got the nut on square, snugged that down & started her up, still quite rough on start up, it did catch the hi idle (never really checked before) anyway I think I have to raise it a bit.
Since it was on jackstands I put it in gear & played with the throttle a bit, damn I'm doing 50 already.20250113_135021.jpgSo all that's left is trying to get the tune a bit better, find the leak in the A/C & have the hocky stripe put on, can't do the stripe till spring anyway

Wish it ran as good as it looks! 20250113_141804.jpgOh yea fuel pressure is sitting at 3lbs, till I nail it on the road I won't know if it's enough for that rare moment when you have to avoid something!

Almost forgot, Thanks 68, that glue does seem super strong, & saved me from buying another new part that would probably fail!
Feels good to fix something without spending gobs of money, doesn't it? I think that eventually you'll many uses for that glue. It's the best that I've found for most any material.
