SWEETNESS!!!!!!!

Some of my 408 parts I scored arrived today!

H-beam rods and Diamond Pistons.

Piston specs, opinions welcome. I did not know what specs the pistons were untill today, That "Forced Induction Dish has me a little concerned....I hope I can still use them and not have a shitty compression ratio. :helpme:

Nice lookin' stuff. I'll bet your excited! No worries on the compression. Unless the specs I found were flawed, it should be 9.6:1 on a 70cc head. About perfect!

You have no idea how giddy I am right now. :D

These are the first forged pieces I've ever owned and they are marvelous!

My forged 408 crank should be here any day noe too! :giggedy:

Dippy talks to his pistons :D

Yeah... the first time you hold a custom-forged piston like that, you think twice about putting it in a dark hole and throwing abusive pressure and explosions at it... it's just too, well, pretty. :D

You'll get over it.

The forged (shelf) TRWs/Speed Pros, etc, are not nearly so beautiful.

So, we're going from sleeper to insulting sleeper? Melikey!! *does dirty dance*:shifty:

Mmmmmmmm yes Jass it will be quite MARVELOUS, hmmmmm...yes....hmmmmmm.

408" 1998 5.9 Magnum, not so mild cam, magnum heads, Eddy Performer Intake, 750 Eddy carb.

A518 with stage 2 Trans-Go shift kit and mild stall converter.

9.25 SG rear with 3.91's.

Might even get Eddy heads and/or EFI. We'll see. ;)

The only reason I'm running a Dual plane Eddy Performer. It has the offset water neck so it fits with my A/C. Don't hurt me! [smilie=f:

*wild giggling* :giggedy:

I belive it's a Scat IIRC, forged and unballanced.:gaga:

Some more good news, I found a set of modified A/C brackets that will allow me to run almost any center thermostat intake! :giggedy:

Been a while since I checked your progress...sweet parts you got comming there...:2thumbs:

SOunds like it's going to be a nice set-up when it's done.....Where and what are you getting done to the 518?

Send me all your parts for free if I'm wrong, but don't LA engines and Magnums use different pistons? I'm too tired to look right now, but I think that's the case.

As far as the crank material goes, I don't think it makes a lick of difference for what you're doing... but, look at the parting line that runs lengthwise through the crank. If it's a thin line, you've got a casting. If it's wide (and I mean, like 1/4" or so) and ground down, it's a forging. From the pic you took, it looks more like a cast unit to me. It might make a difference when you have it balanced (you know you absolutely have to do that, right?), but even the cast crank will outlive the block when it comes to ridiculous power outputs so no worries about strength.

As far as the offset water neck (which you say isn't a problem anymore anyhow), virtually any '80s 360 or 318 four-barrel motor has that offset water neck, and will kick the shit out of the Performer on the dyno, with the possible exception of using stone-stock 318 heads. The minor weight difference does not overcome the large HP deficit on even a 318; I can only imagine the appalling power loss on a 408. The '80s 4v intake is actually a very decent piece, particularly if you block off the EGR and remove the standpipe in the plenum floor (plug the hole).

I have not yet found a reason to use an LA Performer unless you've got a stock 2v 318 and happen to have one lying around, or you score it cheap and can profit by exploiting the uninformed.

I don't know weather my crank is cast or forged, I got it so cheap I really don't care. :D

I was told that LA and Magnum blocks use the same pistons being as they are essentially the same block, I have a '98 5.9 Magnum block BTW.

The guy I got the crank/rods/pistons from was going to build a 5.9 Magnum stroker anyways and then desided to go with a NASCAR engine instead. :D

I'm probably going to run one of those Crosswind intakes or even an RPM Air Gap.

But it has to have injector bosses on it, that I'm hoping to make use of one day.

The blocks are similar but not identical... the problem with the pistons lies with the valve reliefs, which would be specific to the cylinder heads. Again, I'm not sure on this, but as I recall the Magnum pistons are different. The balance is different between a 360 and a 5.9 Magnum as well. Before you start buying more parts, make sure of what you've got, though it may not be an issue since you have no choice but to have the engine balanced anyhow.

I thought about buying one of those Crosswind intakes when I bought that buttload of speed parts a few months back, but then felt guilty about sending money to Chinese folks who'd simply ripped off a design on which American Vic Edelbrock Jr. spent a lot of American money to pay Americans to design an intake which would be cast in America and machined by Americans to be sold to American consumers for their American engines. Then I thought about Wal Mart, and peed on a picture of a smiley face... a totally American-devised symbol hijacked by the biggest purveyor of overseas goods on the continent.

But I'm Canadian. :shifty:

I've got 5.9 pistons, 5.9 block and 5.9 heads, I see no problem.

I never liked the build quality of those Crosswinds, I'll probably give Ole Vic my money just like I did for those carbs. :D

NAFTA, bitch. :D

If the engine's all Magnum, and the pistons are Magnum, joy to you. Just trying to help you avoid a snafu later.

And though I've said it twice previously, you absolutely must have the reciprocating assembly balanced. There is no way around this with a stroker small-block, period.
