Not A Duster's Most Excellent Progress

:D Even I'm waiting till Spring to fix my wiper assembly.......oh for the want of 4 walls and a ceiling around my Jeep:doubt:

And the damn thing came out.

Of all the disassembly we have done on this car, the only beligerant bolt was on the driver's side front spring hanger.

Took a lot of swearing and yanking on the 24" breaker bar to get it loose.

The budget shock from the body shop has left me looking for ways to save some dough however I can.

The brake lines from the 7-1/4 diff are in decent shape, so I'm going to re-use them. The big one fits the 8-3/4 almost like it belongs. The shorter one is going to need to be re-bent a bit, but I think it will still be re-usable.

A little emery cloth and some paint & they should work just fine.

LOL brake lines are cheep to make yourself arnt they???.....useualy spending someone elses money when im doing them LOL

Brakes are the one area that I would NEVER scrimp, :dgt: ..is your ass only worth the $15 that you will save?

Golly nodda, brake lines are cheep..besides, you can't know the condition inside of them as there can be hidden rust. But if you must re-use them flush them out real good with brake cleaner and compressed air...if you see any rust come out replace them.

Yeah - I know all that guys.

If these things were not in near-perfect condition, I would not consider using them.

68/beeper - don't forget that I live in the land of gouge pricing and taxes - nothing is cheap here...especially parts for 30 year old cars. Best price I have found for a prebent rear axle line kit is $49.00. (Not including the rubber hose that goes between the block and body hard-line.) I would consider bending my own from generic lengths, but finding those to fit is easier said than done. I'm not experienced enough with a flaring tool to feel comfortable with "do it yourself" lines...not an area I want to practice & learn on....

As it stands, I have to replace the hard line from front - to back ($94.00) because I broke it dis-assembling the car, and all of the front lines and hoses to accomodate the disc brake swap. ($130.00)

Anyways - I've inspected the rear axle lines closely, and other than being dirty from axle grease, they seem to be in pretty good shape - not even external rust. I'm going to clean them up and if I find any other issues then I will replace them.

Thanks fellas.

I have a snap-on line flaring tool and even on my best days back when I always had to keep tweaking the lines to get a good fit. Now that places like fine lines exist it'll be a lot easier to get good stuff right out of the box.
Sucks about those costs up in polar land:eek:

Well - little progress to report tonite.

Went out to the garage for a bit, but after the day at wurk, I was pretty much unmotivated to say the least.

Spent about an hour half-heartedly cleaning gunk off of stuff I'm reusing for the diff and came back to the house.

I hope that can of POR15 from a couple years back has never been opened....... they have a tendancy to dry up once they been opened and moister gets in the can.... strangest paint I have ever worked with, its all backwards to other paints in how it reacts to inviroments and surface conditions.

nodda if you have frame connectors you dont need a pre bent set for front to rear..just 2 lengths of straight ..and VERY small easy bends...just run it down the inside of the rails

hopefully since you have new brakes and parts your going to run dot 5 and never worry about dead paint again

Not all new parts. The front discs are from the Dart Sport & in real decent shape. The drums, shoes & cylinders on the rear end are in outstanding - if not new shape.

Not sure if they could be cleaned out enough to use DOT 5 fluid...sure would be nice tho....

As long as stuff is in decent shape dot 5 is the way to go. This gets debated to death in the harley boards and I have switched all types of vehicles in the past with no trouble whatsoever.

Well - been busy at work, so only got a couple evenings in this week.

Here I've got the wimpy 7-1/4" out all I'm re-using of of it are the park brake cables as they are in like new condition...

...Ever wonder what the inside of the brakes looked like when your car was new?

Here's a look at the inside of the little 10" drums that came on the 38,000 mile Demon. A little brake cleaner & you can see that everything is like new...even the origional colours of a lot of the parts are visible.

This is the 8-1/4" from the Dart Sport. Using the "340" leaf springs and the lower shock mount/sping plate from this. Wanted to use the U-bolts but they were too messed up.

Anybody know of a decent Canadian source for those U-bolts? Local dealer wants $16.00 a peice + taxes for the MP ones and I can't find a jobber service replacement...
