Not A Duster's Most Excellent Progress

Gas tank's finally ready to put in....just a coat of paint away.....(yeah - I know it's supposed to be silver....)

Forgot to prep the straps - doing that today as well....

blue straps? Looking very nice Nota, but that black 340 looked evil, did you flirt with the dark side?

Yeah....that's me....:D

I decided the thing would blend in nicer if it was black like the rest of the underneath. I also had some rockerguard left over, so I taped where the straps would fit, rocker guarded it, removed the tape & sprayed it semigloss black.

The original mat came off in one piece, so I was able to re-use it as well...

275 looks good!!

Thanks,

I was told that it was as big a tire as I could get in the wheel wells, but only if the rim width & back-spacing were spot-on. The odds of meeting all of those specs were pretty slim with used swap-meet wheels & tires, so I am pleased.

Nope - the straps are also black.

I liked the engine in black with grey accessories, so it will likely end up painted that way again, once it's cleaned up. Corporate Blue just is not an eye-pleasing colour to me and the hemi-orange will look odd against the viper blue engine bay IMO...

Dark side? Well - I owned a '55 Chevy once.....

Looking good nodda, what's your final opinion on the por-15 sealer?

The rocker guard is a nifty idea, nice touch.

Good score on the swap meet rolling stock, lady luck was smiling at you that day.:)

Glad you found a compatible flywheel instead of being forced to use a power robbing slush box. I keep hoarding 4 speed stuff. Gotta have it. Im a speedshift addict.

Well - when I look into the gas tank through the filler hole with a drop light stuffed in through the pickup/sender hole, I see a nice, smooth silvery-grey surface where I once saw nothing but flaky red rust. Thank you for the info. The treatment was expensive, but much cheaper than a new tank.

Yeah - the rocker guard adds a bit more protection I think, plus it leaves a texured finish to the underneath of the car which is nice. I found it to be a bit on the shiny side, so I top-coated it with semi-gloss black.

I have always been a fan of Weld wheels - particularily the Draglites & Prostars, but I've never considered them because felt they are out of my budget. (Like ET wheels - :gaga: ) Because I'm changing the car to 4.5" B.P. as I go, I needed to replace the 4" BP ralleys that are on the car. The plan was to find something cheap (like used ralley wheels) and mount new rubber to them...

I got lucky & scored these with like - new BF rubber for less than the tires alone would have cost me. As an added bonus, they are 15" which are impossible to find on a set of used wheels - particularily ralleys.

The pic is a bit misleading - they are a bit beat up and need a serious cleaning & polishing, but the little extra effort is worth it given the low I price paid I think.

Da ho.

I am out of money. With many bits n' pieces left to buy.

Any $$$ savings will be crucial to me actually getting the thing back on the road. If that was with a auto, well - I would have to live with that.

That being said, I'm happy to be getting the 4speed in now myself. :D

Looking good Nodda!

I've always like that 275/60 tire, just a perfect mix of height and width.:giggedy:

But they were a little too wide for the Newport, so thats why I went with 255/70's.:)

my only complaint about black painted engines is when they leak you can never find out where.....big block red looks GREAT with viper blue

Today's progress so far.

I have finally gotten the week off from work that I promised myself last September after the insanity that was summer 2005.

So - these updates may be a bit more frequent as I work away at multiple projects.

The deal is to get the running gear in, the glass installed and send it back to the bodyshop next week.

Today involves getting the dash ready to re-install (it has to go in before the glass.) aligning the panels that are on it at this point, painting other misc. items. I'm going to spin the car around in the garage today as well.

Hopefully installing engine/trans & front suspension/brakes tommorow & Friday.

A friend is coming out Friday to weld the trans tunnel in for me

So - todays pics. I found a nicer looking version of the Abody dash at the spring swap meet last year. I has a black "leatherette" look rather than the cheezy fake woodgrain common to these cars. It needs lots of TLC, so I am repainting it and using the instruments from the original cluster so that I retain the car's actual speedo/odometer. (second pic is the original, third pic is the "new faceplate with a couple coats of semigloss black.)

I'm also working on painting the aircleaner assembly that I got from Doc Jass last year and looky - the trunk lid is aligned and closes properly....:giggedy:...anyone know where to find those little rubber bumpers that go on the underside?

may sound strange but is the car realy low mileage?..if your rebuilding EVERYTHING..and it looks like you are...why not reset the speedo to zero..since in all honasty it will be a "new" car

Well - if I was putting in the aftermarket gauges, I would have started at "0"

But this car is 38,000 orig miles, so I thought if the dash was remaining "stock" it should reflect that.

Well the car ended up pointed in the other direction...gonna do some serious painting & gack on the frame & front of the core support tommorow.

Also got the engine stripped of most of it's old paint & ready for new, aircleaner's all black & wrinkly and the tranny looks like cast iron again...

Pulled the dash frame apart to paint it plus dug out the front disks from the dart where I had stashed 'em almost a year ago.
