84 Crewcab...AKA..Patches

My PS hose from the pump up to my HB has been leaking through the hose itself for a couple weeks now, made quite the mess...or just rust proofing engine bay and undercarriage...;)

Called locally for the hose and they wanted close to a $100 for it, so went and ordered one from Rockauto for $30.....got the replacement hose today. Since I used 2nd Gen hoses for my HB install it was an easy order. ;)

Only difference was the size of the nut into the back of the PS reservoir. OEM 2nd Gen was 18mm, new hose has a 16mm nut. Other then that quick and straight forward re/re.

And I have been considering changing out the 2nd Gen front seats in the crewcab. Well the other day I got these for FREE!

They are out of a 2004 Ram, power drivers side seat with lumbar support...drivers foam and cover are toast, and the console top/arm rest has a couple cracks, but considering what the junkyards want for a OK set I can't complain.

Been pricing out a new seat foam, cover and a new cover for the console. For about $250 I can have a nice set-up....way less then what I would have had to pay at the JY. :)

Was nice last week so took Ol' Patches down for a quick bath, then snapped a couple better pics of the new bumper. ;)

Lookin' pretty good....... from the doors forward.

Starting to tire of the patchy look to be honest....will have to do a bit of painting this summer, the bad prep and materials I used on the roof and RH fender need to be fixed. But will probably repaint the whole truck once the new shop has been built. ;)

I have a 1500 mile trip in the truck next week, so decided I better service my front hub bearings...been about 30K km's years since I did them last. The last time the inner seals were toast, and it looked really bad in there.....had to put in new bearings and races too. Well this time it was only slightly better....inner seals were gone again, and water had worked into the grease. ugliness....

Bit of water got in past the front hub selector O-ring....but not too bad.

Front bearing....

I think my spindles are just worn out....think that is why I have the inner seals cooking out on me, and the rusty surfaces between the bearings and the spindle.

Cleaned up the caliper mounting points, scuffed the rotors and brake pads, and Also rotate my tires at this time as well. Should be good for our trip now. ;)

cow ill tell you right now..going reciever front/rear and keeping the winch "portable" is the best thing ever...means the winch NEVER is stuck out in the weather to rust, moveable to ANYTHING with a hitch, put one on a trailer and you can pull stuff up AND down the trailer(add a spot in the back for a pulley)..heck you could even add a reciever to the bobcat

I thought that bumper looked vaguely familiar. I have the same one on the front of my little '94 B4000 (Ranger wannabe). There's a manual control 8K HF winch sitting on it now.

BTW, I just picked up a '75 W300 yesterday, so this thread has given me a ton of ideas for it already.

And before anyone says "pics or it didn't happen", here ya go. And FYI, I don't need to clean the dust off my camera lens. We got a mini blizzard that decided to blow in just as I was getting back home from the 2 hour drive to go get the truck.

There's 440ci of giggle inducing goodness under all that dirt.

Dang it. I just peeked in the door here to look around for a minute and you guys are already being a bad influence on me again. Thank's for the motivation cows. :bravo:

Note-been trying to upload to photobucket all day....if I didn't have 3000 pics on the site already I would use another pic provider. I eventually got the pics to work using my old PC hard drive and then copy and paste in this thread......what a gong show! :(

Well yesterday I drove almost 1200km's, and 15.5hrs, round trip to Grande Prairie AB and back, to pick up a couple items I purchased at a Richie Bros Auction. Since I couldn't bid in person, I bid on-line....very handy system they have, and couldn't be happier with my purchases.

I purchased a simple backhoe attachment for my skid steer, and a 2 post hoist (9000lb rating) for the new shop when it gets built. ;) Same hoist I had been looking at locally, but got it for $1200 cheaper! Pretty certain it's off shore built, but will inspect it carefully, and if I have to modify and strengthen it I will.

Due to the Easter weekend I was not sure if they were going to be open, so had to call early...Thankfully they were. I had got the truck and trailer ready to go the night before, so all I had to do was basically jump in and go. About an hour north of town the snow started.....and I had just put on my worn summer tires last week!

Snow got worse and worse as the trip went on, at least through BC, and evened out to a steady snow fall by the time I got into Alberta. Again thankful for the 4wd that's for sure.

Once I arrived at the RB Auction house they got me loaded up, chained everything down really well.

Then filled up on some cheap Alberta diesel and started heading for home.....snow was even worse through BC on the return trip....over 12" of wet slippery snow in some areas!

Ol Patches did great as usual, and got me home about 11pm last night.

Today I ran to my storage and hauled a bed load of boxes and stuff back to the house.

Then dove into replacing the drivers side door latch mechanism. After my last trip my drivers door would not latch on the first try, sometime took 2 or 3 times to get it to latch. Tried lubing things but didn't help, so pulled a mechanism from a spare door....actually a loose one that came in the donor 1st Gen I picked up for the RC conversion.

Pulled it out, cleaned it in some solvent, compressed aired it dry and lubed it up really good. Man there are a lot of rods that run to that mechanism....5 different rods! Door closes much better now. Also Had to replace a couple spring clips on the door panel since a couple broke.

Then I decided I would finally install a fuel pressure gauge. I have had most of the parts for a while, but just never got around to doing it. It's just in the engine compartment, but better then nothing. Seems my Delphi piston lift pump is delivery a steady 10lbs pressure.....went down to 9lbs when I brought the RPM up to about 2500. Pretty happy with that!

Just an update in this thread....I have been having issues with a rattling, loose valve type noise for a few months now and been getting progressively worse. Is RPM and engine load specific.....if I am accelerating with more then 5lbs boost, or under deceleration with no throttle, there is no noise. The noise seems to only be under "cruise" situation where the engine uses enough power to maintain road speed. And it starts rattling around 1500 rpm and is the worse around 1700rpm, but will rattle on up through 2000+rpm.

I have done a few things to try and figure out what the noise is....removed belt (no change), changed oil from T6 5w40 to T4 15W40 (helped a little), added 2 quarts of lucas oil additive to 15W40 and made things worse and swapped back to the T6 5w40, adjusted valves (no change), removed M/H timing spacer (helped a little), and lots of poking around the motor listening.

From some suggestions I decided to check to make sure the timing gear nut was tight, and that there was no cracks in the timing gear. Well last week I did this and found a crack in the timing gear. So was hunting for a new or good used gear when a friend (and local 1st Gen'er Dan123dbl) texted me about a timing gear for sale on craigslist....called and had it shipped up to me.

So yesterday was the swap the gear time...and I figured it would be maybe 3-4 hours to do the job, well as things often do things went sideways....:(

Tore things apart and got the cracked gear off. It was not cracked all the way to the outside of the gear, but probably a good 3" crack starting at the center of the keyway and going out.

And with the good used gear....

I had rotated the motor to line up the timing marks before removing the gear so I could get the new gear installed correctly. Started to install the new gear and was having a heck of a time getting the gear to go onto the IP and line up with the woodruff key. I finally figured I got it on and tightened it up but when I was probing the keyway with a small piece of wire things did not feel right, so I pulled the gear to make sure things were OK, well the woodruff key was tilted backwards in the keyway on the IP and would not move or come out for all my trying.

I did not want ot alter the orientation of the IP so was trying to get the woodruff key out on the bottom side of the shaft....eventually I had to rotate the IP shaft so it was pointing upwards and was finally able to work it loose.

Well this is what I found....

I don't think all that damage to the woodruff key was from me installing the new gear, I found little shards of metal in the timing case caked with oil, and a piece of woodruff key smooshed on the side of the IP shaft.

I also found this on the IP shaft....

It was deep enough at the top side of the shaft to catch my finger nail on it easily. I think the gear was not seated properly on the IP shaft after I did the IP reseal about 3 years ago.....Oops! I used some emery cloth to clean that area up and dug out a spare woodruff key and tried again to get things lined up and installed.

After a hour or so of fighting it was suggested to me that I should try loosening the IP so I could have a bit of wiggle to get the gear on properly. Did this but I could not get the gear on properly, so I removed more and more from the IP and it still wouldn't go on. I finally decided to pull the IP completely.

Once I did this I was finally able to wrestle things together properly and after checking the woodruff key in the keyway it was seated properly.

While I was in there I decided to swap out the oil pump for the one from my 89 motor.

Even though the one form my 89 motor looks like it has had along and hard life compared to the one removed from my 93 motor, I figured I would still swap it in since it could potentially be one of my issues.

I finished re-assembling everything about midnight, got the system bled and fired the truck up. The motor did "seem" to be running a tad different, but only ran it for about 5 min before cleaning up and going to bed. Have a bunch of running around to do today so will hopefully see if things are better.
