72 Challenger R/T/A

gomopar440

Livin' my life...one gas station at a time.
 Whadda ya mean RTA?

I plan on using a lot of the engineering and design elements of both the R/T and the T/A Challengers, some other ideas from the AAR Cuda as well as some new technology stuff thrown in as well. I have no use for fender tags, build sheets or numbers matching anything. I want it to PERFORM. There's enough musem quality resotrations that never see anything but the back of a trailer and the car show circut. I plan on driving this car so I want it solid, fast and comfortable.

The specs will be something like:
Engine - 500ci all aluminum RB engine with EFI. PS, PB, AC (EDIT: The aluminum block and EFI are on the back burner until I can find ANOTHER 10K to dump in the engine!)
Trans - TF727 w/ GV OD or I may use a newer A518 w/elec OD & BB Adv Adapter plate  (EDIT: Forget about the A518. Almost no performance parts and not as strong as the 727)
Axle - 8&3/4"rear with HD aluminum carrier and rear housing brace
Brakes - Wilwood big disks all the way around
Hood - FG T/A repop (EDIT: Got it!)
Wing - Go Wing (not gull wing) (EDIT: Got it!)
Chin Spoiler - Custom chin spoiler similar to the AAR but will wrap around toward the front wheel openings.
Rear window - Louvers. anyone know where to get a repop? I ain't spending $900 for NOS or used!
Body - As much FG as possible. '70-'71 fenders, f/r valances and trunk lid (EDIT: Got most of it except the trunk lid. Maybe after I get it running.)
Grill - '70 type but pulled out to the front like a Charger 500
Doors - FG using Electric Life PW kit and shaved handles with electric door poppers
Windows - 1/8" Speedglass, tinted
Dash - Regular guage cluster w/aftermarket guages (no wood grain), Recover '70 dash (3 spkr/AC) in grey vinyl, modern stereo (EDIT: Got the guage setup finished!)
Seats - Modern sport buckets (Recaro, Momo, Carrera etc...), sport seat belts (not a true 5pt harness)
Interior - Carbon Fiber for console and door inserts, redo all plastic panels, carpet and headliner in grey
Misc - roll cage (tight to body), minitubs, side exhaust (think Viper), taillight panel and lights replaced ('70), quarter side lights switched to '70-'71 style, move gas cap to driver side and use a flush fliptop type cap (think sport bike style) (EDIT: Got the 70-71 quarters installed now.)

This is a rough outline of my ideas for the Challenger. Definately going to be a one of a kind, yes?

I'll post the pics I have when I get back to work tomorrow. They're on my computer there, and I will add more later as I get them from PA.

Can I buy you a beer?

My kinda thinkin also, the numbers cars are great but my need for "improvements" over stock is what keeps me happy.

Sounds like it will be one wild ride, looking forward to updates.

As promised, here's some pics. (in no particular order)

WELL? :shifty:

Ok, ok, thats all for now. I'll be getting more from the body shop soon (hopefully) and post em when I get 'em as well as any damage/cancer reports.

So far everything sounds as it was represented to me before the sale, so no surprises yet.

If anyone needs some of the stuff in the pics on the cars let me know. If I can pass the parts I'm not using on to my fellow Moparnuts here, I'd rather do that than post them on Ebag. I will just take what I don't use on the black car and put it on the green car if I don't sell it.

Yes the RT hood, radio and tape deck are going to go and maybe the Rally guages as well if I can get a functional set of the stangard guages to replace it. If anyone has some of he FG pieces I'm looking for and wants to trade for steel parts let me know via email or PM.

Update:

I found a Go-Wing for sale a little while ago in an auto trader ad in Mississippi. I picked it up for $125 while I was back in New Orleans for training and had it shipped (another $40) to my car in PA. While I was there I also went to my friends junkyard and got some parts to convert my 72 to a 70. I got a bunch of stuff from him:
*entire 70 tailpanel and tailights
*rear sidemarker lights and the 4"-6" of the quarter panel all the way around the lights
*rear wiring harness from the kickpanel connector to the tailights
*a standard dash bezel
*a 70 grill (1/4 of the center eggcrate part is missing but I have a plan for fixing that)
He let me have all that for $130. [smilie=2: The sad part is that I think I got about all that was left that was worth anything from his stash of about a dozen ebodies. I had my brother in New Orleans ship it for me. That was another $80.
Breaking News!!! Lookie what I just got off the Ebag last night!

After a close look at the pics, it appears to be an Unlimited Products T/A hood like the pics on their webpage ( http://www.up22.com/challenger70.htm#top ). The guy says the hood has been reinforced at the hinge mount points with some square steel tubing (green part in the underside pic). It does need some fg repair but that souldn't be a problem (I hope). I'll take the R/T hood off the black car and put it on the parts car for now. I may try to replace the whole front end (firewall & forward) of the parts car later so I don't want to get rid of some of these parts until I decide what I'll do with that one.

What do you want for the rally guages, I'd love to have em, don't know if it's in the budget though, shoot me a line worst I can do is cry & wonder why I wasn't born rich instead of handsone! [smilie=e:

I'm going to wait until I get the first car running before I try to swap in the standard guages. Until then, I'll have to hold onto the Rally guages. Don't worry though, when they go up on the chopping block, they'll be offered exclusively to the registered nuts here first. Not the Egouge unless nobody here want's them. I'm thinking something like a private email auction to keep everyone honest. I don't know for sure yet but I'll figure it out as the time comes.

Trying to get this hood shipped is turning out to be a royal pain in the rear. I've been having problems with Hotmail sending my messages to the seller. They've "Delayed" at least two of them so far and the guy is trying to back out of the deal now. Maybe it's for the best. His hood is fairly rough and is only $100 less then a brand new pin on front T/A hood from Unlimited Products. The shipping would be about $20-$30 cheaper coming straight from Unlimited as well.
