Fishy's Ramcharger

Fishy

Omnipotent Seaweasel
Back when I was living in Michigan and my relationship of 10 years was on the rocks, I had called 69 and told him I was thinking about moving back home. I wasn't dead set on that idea but, the thought was in my head. A few days later, he emails me pics of this 1979 Dodge Ramcharger with "Macho Package", and uses it as bait to get me back home. "You come back and it's yours!" Damnit! Using my dream truck as bait...... jerk! :D Well, it worked! This truck wasn't the main reason I moved back but, I won't get into that.

Originally, this was a 360 4bbl "Macho Package" (which means squat to me) rig. The previous owner swapped in a 318 4bbl and a 2wd steering box. That box would later come to bite me in the ass......actually, it bit 69 in the head! :bwuhaha: Funny story actually (at least I think so). We were up at the shop and had a battery that needed to be charged so, we threw it in my RC and started the engine. There was really nothing else that needed to be done at the time and, my truck just idling and sitting there was too much to bear! Screw it! I'm going for a drive around the property and enjoying my truck a little. So, I'm making laps around the trails and next thing I know, I see 69 in my rear view on his quad stalking me. I sped up just a bit to have some fun. I forgot to mention at this point that the steering box had a dead spot between 2 & 4 O'clock on the wheel. I tried to make a slight right hand turn and let off the gas. I hit the dead spot in the wheel and the truck hit a tree. My initial reaction (spoken aloud to myself) was, "Why am I not mov------OH!" I didn't even feel 69 hit my tailgate when I hit the tree! I'm sure he did though! :D So, we use the minivan to tow my busted up rig back to the shop and there it sat for about 2 years or so.

Enter my coworker Jake. 69 and I helped Jake (he's on here as '70 Powerwagon' or something like that but, never posts) move a BUNCH of rigs from his dads place (not too far from Wildcats actually) and, one of the rigs was a '74 D300 1 ton dually with a flatbed. Naturally I was eyeballing this rig as parts for my Ramcharger! Well, I would up with that '74, and we gutted that pig like we were at a luau! The cab was shot but, the doors and front clip were good enough that we would eventually put them on my RC and call it good for now.

The only real damage done to my truck was the radiator and front bumper. Everything else was getting swapped out anyways, so I wasn't really all that pissed when I wrecked it. The '74 supplied all I needed except the radiator. I already had the '77/'78 grille from a previous run to a local yard. Enough story time. Now for the pics. :)

These are the pics of the '79 that 69 bribed me with. :D Pretty good lookin' rig! I HATE the '79 grille though! Remonds me of a K5 Blazer.

This dash actually got swapped out for an earlier, much nicer looking dash. I don't have pics of the dash swap though.

Maybe it's just me but, buckets DO NOT belong in trucks! I'll be putting in a bench seat out of a newer model Ram. (See Cow's thread for how I'm doing my swap. I've studied his thread for that, among many other reasons. Thanks Cow! :2thumbs: )

So, moving onto "that day". :D Like I said, I hated that grille so, this accident gave me an excuse to get the stuff needed to swap it over to the '77/'78 grille. The passenger fender was already buckled when I got the truck, so it needed replaced anyways. It had the '80's hood on it. I wanted the earlier "birdbath" hood. All I was really out of after the wreck was the front bumper and radiator. I still need to replace the radiator. I got a new front bumper from the '74, as you'll see in later pics.

"Why have I stopped movi------ Oh!"

a few things bear mentioning...

the truck was given to me for "work"....the owner didnt want the RC cause of teh goofy "non cut doors" and bought a early 80s full cut door k5..and gave me this truck as payment to do the floors in the k5..which was a rot box...thing is he NEVER got around to having me do the floors and eventualy sold the k5..but gave me the tittle long before ..and didnt care either way

a few months prior to the tree i had used it to haul my lloyds to the micro car show ...as well as the 22 foot trailer..while it didnt "like" the weight and the hills...while oon the micro car "cruise" i ran wrecker for break downs..a few wrong turns down NARROW old country roads (so narrow they didnt have lines) i had to flip a u turn a few times..thats where those RC's come into theire own with that 96 inch wheel base..even with a 22 foot monster out back you can still get turned round....that day is when i found out about the sloppy box....and even managed to pull the 22 foot trailer up the backside of the 40..which..is well..so bad that in the winter the power company has an old abrams tank that they use on that backside to deal with power pole issues.....

ill have to get fishy the pics..but that RC did PILES of work on the 40..pulling down barns 60 foot+ trees after gettting 2 chainsaws stuck in it...LOTS...always felt a lil under powered in 4low..later we found out factory 323 gearing

as for the tree..i had been chasing him down straights trying to grab the bumper while on the quad..about 3 foot from the tree i managed it them WHAM head to tail gate

not more than a few months before fishy got back i found a RC at the wrecker with a HUGE lift..grabbed all the parts and put all but the body lift on it..the brand new rear shoes that were in a box in that rc i grabbed as well

Moving on to when I ripped the '79 sheet metal off and put the '74 sheet metal and '77/'78 grille on. :)

I pulled it up to the shop doors, gathered my tools and started surgery.

Once I got the '79 grille off, it looked even more like a K5 to me! :doh:This set up HAD to go, and NOW!

The important part survived! The emblem! I do need one for the driver side though. It was gone when I got the truck. :(

I have a couple more pics but, I can't seem to upload them. :wtf:
The grille and hood both had D O D G E so, I got rid of the letters on the hood. The other pic is just of the hood on the truck.

The truck will sit until spring since winter is coming and, it snows pretty bad up at the shop. I also need to buy a few things before I blow the truck apart again and get a few things fixed on it before it sees the road again. I need to go through the braking system. Front pads are,.....what front pads?! [smilie=2: I might also have to replace the master cylinder but, we'll see what the pads do first. Also, going through the rear drums, shoes and maybe wheel cylinders. I might end up replacing those anyways just because. The '74 had headers on it, so those will go onto my rig. It needs a tune up, oil change, radiator, hoses, and a few other odds and ends. At some point I will also be redoing the ball joints, wheel bearings, front rotors, and a couple other various things I can't remember at the moment. I'll also need a new set of 33/12.5/15's. The "before" pics were the 31's which are now on our '74 D100 ext. cab, longbed 2wd. The front 33's, as you can see in the pics are pretty bald. I know they won't be cheap but, I'll save up for em or, use my taxes for new rubber all around. :)

More pics and progress posts to come in the spring, unless I gather enough parts to warrant going up and pulling it into the shop to work on it before then.

69, I have a couple of those "workhorse" pics but, I only posted what was immediately relevant to my progress thread. If you have the other pics, feel free to toss em up on here! :)

The damage on the doors looks way worse than it actually is. I have the doors from the '74 flatbed as well, that will also wind up on this truck at some point. The tub, cowling, top and frame were not damaged at all in the wreck.

I was able to upload the last two pics from my phone.
The double D O D G E was a bit much, like I said so, the letters on the hood got peeled off.

I'm actually diggin this truck in white, though it won't stay white.
IMAG1900.jpg

Also wanted to include the side shot.

You'll also note that I now have triple turn signals per side.

Looking good Fishy, glad to see some work getting done on the old RC!! I agree that double stacked square headlights is not the best look...the round headlight grille is much better. Personally I like the 72-73 grille the best.

I only loosely hung the front clip on it to keep the impending snow off the motor and wiring etc... Come Spring, it'll be taken off and I'll be doing a bunch of work to it. The fender wells aren't even in it right now. It won't take much to get it road worthy but, it's gonna take a ton more work to get it in the condition I want it in! Eventually it'll all get blown apart, stripped down to bare metal, body work, rust proof the frame...yadda yadda yadda. I might end up driving it for a bit in the Spring just so I can get a little fun out of it before I tear it to the ground. :) I'm looking at your thread for ideas on what needs to be done, just not to the extent you're currently going to. :D

Deals are still out there. One of my co-workers just picked up a running, driving '97 12V for $1,000 with a clean title. It has a couple of dings and dents, some rust, but nothing major. It needs a little work, but none of us can figure out why it was sitting at a scrapyard awaiting the crusher. Something about the transmission (47RE), supposedly, but it works just fine.

good god thats a STEAL.....best ve been able to find is one with 500k on it gone thru at some point..bodys dead 1500$..it is a 1ton 2wd ...its in cali

This one's a 2500 4WD extended cab. All he really wanted was the engine--specifically the injection pump--but the scrapyard told him to take the whole truck, pick off what he wanted, and bring back the shell. Had he stuck with that plan, he would've gotten both D60s, the trans, driveshafts, engine, harnesses, intercooler, radiator, blah, blah, blah for $600. After driving it up and down the highway for a while after getting it back to the shop, he called the yard (about 80 miles away) and said, "What have you got to get for the whole truck?" He sent them the extra $400, and they sent him a clear title. Now he doesn't know what to do with it... "It's too nice to part out, damn it!"

I'd want the bench seat! :D 69 and I have also kicked around the idea of reskinning/grafting '97 and newer sheet metal on my RC to make a kind of modern looking version of the Ramcharger. Basically, we'd make it look like the Mexican RC, just with a pop top. I doubt I'd go through with it but, it is a fun idea. Might be easier to grab a short box Ram of that era and cut and modify the roof to pop off. Obviously we'd have to reinforce the tub as well but, that shouldn't be too difficult. My buddy in Michigan has a '97 Ram shortbox 4x4 with the 360, sittin on 35/12.5/15's. I loved driving that beast! I like that "bench' for some reason.

This one's an extended cab... no bench. Buckets with an armrest/console/"buddy seat" to allow access to the back seat (there was no driver's rear door in '97).

Admittedly, I haven't looked too deeply into this subject but, I'm thinking about running exhaust cut outs on my Ramcharger. Our '74 D100 is running headers into blown out glasspacks and it's LOUD! When I do have to drive it to work in the mornings, I kinda cringe when I have to fire it up at 7 AM and have to wake the neighbors. Anyways, I've been thinking that I want that sound on my Ramcharger (I have headers already, not sure what diameter off hand) but, I want it to be quiet in the neighborhood. I kinda looked into cut outs a bit ago and the average price was about $300-$400 each. I want the kind I can open and close from inside the rig, not the kind where I have to unbolt the caps. Is there an easy way to make these myself for a lot cheaper? I don't know much about this subject so, I'm looking for ideas and opinions. I plan on running straight header into the cut outs, then into pipes into mufflers when closed. Thoughts? Suggestions? Reality checks?

Well, Mr. Gasket makes the inexpensive "trap-door" style that are cable operated, but they're A) cast iron, and B) only available in 2". Allstar sells electric cutouts that go in place of the cap on the bolt-on style of cutout. Those are about $120 each (part #34230). Since you and 69.5 are of the "fab stuff rather than buy it" stripe (an honorable trait), you could make the Y-pipe parts yourselves with some 3" pipe and parts-store 3-bolt flanges (your headers are 3" collectors unless they're something odd like tri-Y or shorty). If you're really feeling ambitious and want to run an X-pipe, I would suggest fabbing something like the picture below, bolted to the headers and with the cutouts in place of the caps. You'd probably want to shorten the outlet legs near the X junction so that your extension pipes to the mufflers are closer together. Right after the X-pipes, you could use something like Flowmaster's R3025 smooth reducer cones to go down to a more-reasonable 2.5" pipe.

Keep in mind, blown-out glasspacks sound nothing like open headers. Open headers are a lot louder--they fucking roar, in fact--and don't have any of that crackly farting sound all glasspacks make, whatsoever. The X-pipe will change the sound by smoothing it out further. My '75 Trans Am's 455 had glasspacks bolted right to the headers and nothing beyond that, and was nowhere near as loud as my 440 with open headers. The PontiRag didn't sound nearly as good, either.
