tiny...aka 1958 lloyd

69.5CUDA

Blah Blah Blah
yeah it aint mopar now but it will be in one way or another ....much like amc, packard, hudson, studabaker, nash, to name a few the company has passed on ..even worse so passed on in 1961 soooo parts are next to imposible to come by...as much as its no mopar its unique in its own right..on a side note the company was not bankrupt but was shown to be buy mercedes and VW....soooo you get the idea

this lil baby was gotten for nothing more than a 1980 351 small block ford block

a little background on the little beasty ..its smaller than it looks and does fit in the bed of a 4x8 truck box as it was brought home on one of those cute little wally mart 200$ trailers

tech specs
slant 2 air cooled 4 stroke 600cc 25hp at 5000rpm(same bore and stroke as a 1200cc vw..hmmmm)
4spd fully syncroed ..with a vacume operated automatic clutch
front engine fwd
1200lbs without ocupants(thats with a full tank of gas)
suspension is something to be amazed by ..upper and lower leaf spring front suspension acting as upper and lowwer control arms..with rack and pinion
e-brake is the FRONT wheels not the rear
rear suspension is a single a-arm on both sides with coils...but there is a single torsion bar acting as a swaybar in the rear
tires are a laughable 3x15..up front theres room...in back ..NO
seats 4 adults comfortably(who writes this garbage?)

currently its going to be my project untill a steady flow of funds returns sometime in the late spring...durring that time i actualy have as best i can tell every supply i could need to finish it short of new tires and a few minor odds and ends (hell ive got plenty of leftover body and paint supplys from the bus)....the idea behind it will be to keep it as low$$ as humanly posible for now...more details to follow ...now for some pics

mods feal free to drop it...it aint a mopar anyway :p yet

first night on the way home..loaded onto the 4x8 wallymart trailer(mind you i cut up a chevy box for a steel deck for it)..with the mini van towing it,,excuse the darkness

same day a few more shots
the "sax o mat" actualy has 2 correct definitions the first of wich is "self winding" wich i plan do do up in (----) just below it in fine brush work the other is automatic transmision

do note the size of the rear door on the lloyd in comarison to the minivan

rear suspension shot as well as the 1/4 inch steel round beam that runs from the engine to the rear bumper

my fav feature of all on it..yes it has FACTORY suicide doors

lil engine shot

upper right is the 6 gal? gas tank(in the owners manual there was an option for a fuel gauge wich was a "nylon stick")..lower left is the air cleaner assy

next pick with the minivan key as a referance those are the valve covers for adjusting the rockers and in the center there is the fuel pump

rack and pinion column shifted 4spd(5 counting reverse)

front suspension..do note the upper and lower leafs..left is the exhaust header....those drive axles are ODD at best...a bolt on yoke with a u joint then into a slider joint down to a realy weird cv joint

a week or 2 ago i started helping a friend move in a rush and was swamped had time to get the lloyd in the shop and that was about it...half my shop is full of porsche engines and parts as well as alfa parts ...still the lloyd has PLENTY of room in there

in the last few days i managed to cut out what little was left of the floors(passenger side about 2foot by 1 foot so rotted i kicked it and it came out)...as solid as the entire car is ...it sat on a farm collecting dust with all but the front and rear glass and drivers side still intact..the dust settled and gathered moisture and rotted ONLY the floor and a little bit of the lower door rockers everything else is as solid as the day it was built

the engine with nothing more than a modifyed rotor from a volvo(cut the locating notch out and drill a screw hole) and it fired up like it was ran yesterday...sputtered and died...realized i was bypassing the fuel pump and put my fuel cell on the roof of the car...fired up and idled ruff but very well...little smoke ..several vacumeleaks from rotted hoses..pluged em and it idled down smooth...i was shocked as i was expecting it to be DOA...ive had to bypass most of the 6volt system..yeah 6 volt ...yuck..fried the coil but the starter doesnt even get warm under 12v...as for the generator...i disconected its wires and theres room on the front of the engine to mount a small 12v alt and retain the genny houseing for its cooling of the engine..i now belive that the 22k kilomiters on the od to be the "original miles" as NO part on the suspension or engine is worn

the floor is comeing along nicely 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 .065 tube to replace the rockers and help tie the car together a bit better 3/4 x3/4 .065 for cross braces floor skin mounts and seat mounts...as for the floor skin scrap 67-69 barracuda fast back back seat-trunk floor panels..just 2 of them covers the entire floor ..there nice and beaded and will work very well for floor material

below is a little bit of befor and after

we love to think our old iron was built VERY well ..and it was to some standard..but ive never seen such craftsmanship on an amreican car..EVERY panel was painted first then assembled..even some cover plateing skin work was made just to cover black painted areas with body colered panels

we like to think older cars come apart easy to restore em ..but this thing takes the cake..EVERY panel..roof, lower quartes, upper quarters, fenders, doors, front valiance, rear valiance, windshield surround, dash, and misc connecting sections all simply unbolt from eachother

the doors and alot of small structual pieces look like someone who was building a 50s gasser got ahold of em ..no weight and alot of HUGE round holes in em ..all stock

95% of the chrome on this car is aluminum not chrome or stainless ...and it polishes out to a mirror shine in seconds:dance:

droped the engine early lastnight..4 bolts(2 welded on u-bolts actualy) hold on the entire front suspension engine and transmision..at that point i realized it has no oil filter and is another leaning tower of power..or is that very little power?

It's like a go-cart you can put plates on...neato.

Looks like you have plenty of work ahead getting it cleaned up, good thing it's small. ;)

anyway im going to spend next to nothing on it....end result im asumeing a 2.2 or 2.5 turbo in the back of it from a mopar..but would like to see how that 600cc runs down the road being as well as it runs its staying EVEN if i put an engine in the back of it (good balast) ..besides the fact that i can have 2 engines in it...1 as an econo and one as balls to the wall LOL

a v8 is pretty much out of the question short of a full tube chassis and full fabriction

ive got a short list of minior mods that are getting carried out..axe the "auto clutch" and replace with a hyd unit setup from a toyota celica(had the parts laying around anyway)
HANG new pedals..i hate the vw style into the floor crap..feals wrong
ford or mopar aluminum MC(again got em laying about)...its got a fruit bowl under the floor atm..ill hang the new one on the wall next to the clutch unit
seats will be either duster high backs or 80s 5.0
mopar alt and wireing from a 60s truck...i want SIMPLE wireing and a SOLID block fuse box..not those euro tinfoil plastic fuses
60s mopar headlight, wiper controls
french the headlights a lil
custom tail lights of unknown origin...
speedo i would LOVE to have something 50-40s mopar ...but if it comes down to it will be replaced with a vdo from a bug(its a vdo now anyway)
60s dodge van seat belts..love those double fingured clips(got em sitting)
gas tank and batt to be moved to the tail
panel over the rear side glass

paint will be a tinted silver(have a gal of silver sitting)

considering the lack of effort to lift up a end and move it over i expect it to handle much like a gokart...also hopeing to put a lil more rubber under it as well as lower it 2 inches WITHOUT editing the suspension travel

Hard to believe it's an American car... not so much because of build quality, but because of the small size!

its not...its german....aperantly they were sold here only in boston....1955 they were wood framework wraped in a fake leather skin YIKES..1957 they were wood frame steel body..1958-1961 they were steel bodys

btw if anyone knows performance VW aircoold i need an ear to chew off

always wanted a early mini cooper..this is smaller and ALOT lighter

Not that it helps you now but when I still lived there I knew a guy who knew a guy who was a walking VW encyclopedia as well as a VW mechanic for many many years. Wish I still knew how to get ahold of the guy:doubt:

Cute car, cuter toes....:bwuhaha:

hey now...its hard to find shoes that fit well so ive been barefoot for years
call me a redneck or a hippe if ya must..but im much more comfortable without:cool:

little more progress

hmm a vert would look pretty good...to bad they never built one

love the way it comes apart

some floor work

upper rear quater

down to just the not unboltables(rear suspension and 3 decoritive plates still to be removed)

up front...NO..in back...with a bit of massageing and alot of creativity yes..up front theres no way in hell i can safely mount anything short of a full reconstruction of the entire structure(i may go that route after i get a feal for what it was..not that hard to take it apart :bwuhaha:)

but just think..runin around on 2cyl get side by side with a lil ricer and fireup an uncorked 2.5 turbo smoke em and switch back to the 2cyl LOL

being the lil 600cc runs at bare minimum its good balast and a perfect engine to get me home should i break a rear engine in it...btw the rear section was FACTORY square tube steel boxed..soooo i have lots of mounting areas

rust repair and body work first...test drive with it as is second...meanwhile im keeping my eyes out for turbo k cars
