Not A Duster's Most Excellent Progress

The best vinyl dye I've used, by far, is SEM... of course, it's something like $15/can, so it damned-well should be. The best thing aboot it is that the sheen comes out identical to original vinyl. I used it on the back seat of the LeBaron, but unfortunately it doesn't work for leather so I'm stuck with very-expensive dye (something like $80) for the BMW 528e seats I'm using up front. Obviously, no word on durability of the SEM stuff yet, but experienced users of the stuff tell me it's great... but I can tell you it's not very scratch-resistant. It already needs a touch-up from being knocked around the garage.

I tried carpet/fabric dye on a pair of FWD LeBaron velour buckets I have; unless it wears in it seems to turn fibers into emery cloth... very stiff and scratchy. I just did a test patch and didn't continue. I don't suppose it makes a "hughj" difference on carpet anyways... as long as it looks OK.

Some of that gloss might "burn off" in the sun, but I use the semi-gloss stuff now (or SEM, if I can swing it) as the gloss black I used on a steering wheel stayed brilliantly shiny, which didn't match the interior--or what there was of it--in the Black Bitch all that well. :D

I think you have mentioned that SEM Dye to me in emails Doc. Just another one of those things I can't find here.

The vinyl dye I bought is suppoed to be a semi-gloss - and now that it's been on the seats for more that 12 hours, some of the sheen seems to be going away.

The fabric dye I have used does not leave a "crunchy" feel at all. At least not on our show drapes....as you could see, the carpet was plenty crunchy before I started, so it's hard to tell.:D

fuck.

....every friggin' time I turn around it's another few hundred bucks I wasn't prepared for..

How does a friggin' winshield break laying on a shelf wrapped in a packing blanket?

I was gonna post that the body shop is fianlly done with the car, and that I was taking the glass in to be installed.

Now this....

friggin' nickles 'n dimes.

Goddamn thing was perfect too.

Ten bucks sez the wife knows! :silenced:

That sucks though... Just gotta take shit as it comes; sometimes it's just easier to bend over and yank 'em down yourself :Fresh Meds:

Man, sorry to hear about the windshield. I am going to have to cut out my windshield and backlight also for sanding and priming on my car and I am not looking forward to it at all. The backlight is hard to come by and the windshield is new, it has not been on the road but about 6 months since I had it replaced back in 94. On a side note, I still have the original uncracked windshield for my challenger but it is pretty sandblasted. It is a LOT thicker than aftermarket though. Thats the sort of thing that happens to glass around here, wiper arm marks and major sandblasting from all the sand storms :( Here is hoping you get the car finished soon :helpme:

...If you knew her better, you wouldn't say that....

...suffice it to say that she is really looking forward to meeting you once you get out here for RCMP school....[smilie=i:

Nah - if she accidently broke it, she'd say so when it happened.

:D I tease, She must be a wonderful Woman to put up with such a... umm... Mopar Nut

I'll hopefully see you in 2 years if I'm not loving some other area of work by then. Your car will be finished and I'll have to see (or ride :)) in it! :Fresh Meds:

Laying on a shelf? When storing a windshield it should be either stood up on its bottom edge leaning against a wall or supported in two places either side of center if laying face down(curved ends pointing up). If laying on it's face the weight of the unsupported ends sticking skyward along with the blanket can be enough to cause a stress crack...I've seen it happen before in my junkyard days.

Sucks that it broke nodda.......:(

That blows, B. Unfortunately for EVERYONE, Beepikins is right. Here is to finding a cheap replacement! :)

I was thinking that may be it. Sucks that it happened though. :(

You'll get a nice shiny one now?

Yeah - but it's $250 that was supposed to go towards finishing the brakes & exhaust.

It's the final nail in the coffin for actually driving the car this year. I'm just gonna take it home and pick away at stuff over the winter as I can afford it I guess.

I hear ya about it sucking having to replace a perfecly good piece due to "mystery" damage while in storage...:doubt:

Luckily (unluckily?) the winshield in the Chally was already cracked when I got it so I haven't had to be very carefull around it. :shifty:

It's pretty straight. -There's a couple small flaws in the paint on the roof n' hood that need to be fixed as well as some scratches that appeared on the inner door...

Hopefully I can drive it back to them for that.

Dats purdy!!!!!! Nice work, looks like the endless hours are starting to pay off.

Wow... looks fantastic, Nodda. I can't wait to see it assembled.

Are you putting a stripe on that, or just going with the natural beauty of the color?
