Bye-bye Scamp, hello Buick GN?

As much as I love the Scamp, it's just not going to meet my needs of wanting a go-fast ride that the family can still enjoy. We love my wife's 64 Valiant 'vert, though being a /6 leaves a little to be desired in the performance department.

I'm leaning toward selling the Scamp and getting a modified GN. These cars are superfast when done right, and can run times far faster than the Scamp, all in air-conditioned, 25 mpg-on-the-highway comfort. They might not have the same visual impact as the Scamp, but driving around by myself is only fun for so long.

What do you guys think?

Well I agree the Gran Nationals are super fast and nice rides but tis a shame to trade a Mopar for a BowTie:doubt: :D
But whatever makes ya happy is all that really matters!:)

Uh, this just in...Grand Nationals are Buicks, not Chevys. :bwuhaha:

I've not found too many folks with too much bad to say about GNs, actually, which is why I'm interested.

Well the Buick GN and Chevy Monte Carlo were basically the same car. Both nice ones too. Ok how about ArrowHead instead of BowTie?:D

Well, I'm a die-hard Mopar guy, but those Grand Nationals are quite a ride.

Good looks, power to spare when the turbo is spooled up, good manners and mileage when its not, and they have a visual appeal all their own.

Ant they're comfortable, to boot.

If the Scamp isn't doing it for ya', I'd say go for it.

(You may be happy with an un-modified one. They really are fast cars.)

I had to replace a few busted turbo bolts in one of those and for a puick they are kinda neat. If you want one and can make a buk in the proccess of losing the scamp and purchasing the new toy I see no harm in that. Run the crap out of it for a while and then get back into something moparish again later.:hmmm:

id honestly consider a unmodified one, they are quick suckers even stock. then you can modify it alittle yourself if it doesnt do it for ya. maybe buy a GN and paint it green like the scamp? get your visual appeal again. hahaha

there nice and only need some tweeking in the blowoff valve linkage...personaly i would TT the slanty and go nuts

My boss has 2 1 -top car and one moonroof car. they are both rattle traps the t-top one is worse. Check for rot on the windshield pillars, around the door hinges and the floors. If ya get the 87 expect brake problems (electronic assist), just swap it over to a reg brake system its not that hard. if ya get one with t-tops wind noise is a big problem even with new weatherstripping. If its been beat on the body will be twisted. Other than that they're overrated.

One of the guys on Moparts has an 87 that runs 11:50s and gets 27mpg on the highway, has ice cold AC, and non-rattling t-tops. There are plenty of 9 and 10 second, completely streetable GNs out there, too. In the looks department, I'd rather have my Scamp, but as far as useability, the GN wins, hands-down.

Hopping up the /6 Valiant is a no-go. It's my wife's car, and she wants it left alone. :dgt:

Modified 5.0 Mustang Coupe with a 5 speed and keep a ton of profit. You'll enjoy driving the Stang as much as the GN, and Stangs are just as fast without the stupid turbo lag and repairs, should a problem occur. A fatter wallet never hurt.

GN's are nice, but so what?

NAC , here my 2 cents worth

A- its your car your choise follow what you think is best .
B- yes the GNs are FAST + NICE looking rides
C- buicks are far way more to build than MOPAR
4- cost for a GN will be aboot 10K ++ for a nice one GNX big $$$$$$$$$$$
E- what aboot a 78-81 MAGNUM or MIRADA ?

like i said just my 2 cents

I have no desire to build anything. I'm going to buy one that's already done, sorted out, etc... I'm not yet ready to go slow (i.e., my 69 R/T that I sold), but the racey-race car like the Scamp, though I love it, doesn't suit the family. If I could take my family in it to go to the ice cream stand, or to my sister's house for a cookout (30 minutes away), I would, but it just doesn't work for those purposes. Driving by myself is boring.

The other option is to pull the cage out of the Scamp, pull the spool out, drop the gears from 4:30s to 3:91s, and put more comfy front seats in it. If I do that, though, it really won't be "The Scamp" anymore.

Put scamps motor in the vert, sell rolling scamp, buy GN. Cool cars IMO.
I have heard on other boards about noise and rattle problems.

Get the GN. You haven't been thrilled with the Scamp and there's nothing worse than having a hobby car you're not thrilled with. A completely different car and a different group that will appreciate it.
But if you think it'll fill the bill better than the Scamp - no hesitation.

Buicks always been my second choice after Ma's offerings.

Mind you - gee- wizzy turbo things ain't my style...as '69 GS wouldn't get kicked outta my driveway however
