There was a Discovery Channel show about that just a few weeks ago.

It's funny. I've lived by Lake Ontario pretty much all of my life. I've even sailed a 30-foot sail boat in what I thought was pretty rough weather.
But even with being in such close proxiimity I can't imagine what it gets like out there in the really rough stuff.

The closest I come is on a really windy but relatively clear day, the waves out in the middle of the lake get so high that they become the horizon of your view and you can no longer see land on the other side.

On a clear calm day you can see almost all of the shoreline between Hamilton and Toronto - even where there isn't many buildings.

It gets rough on the lakes around here too. In the cabin cruiser its not as bad but if you get caught out in a 16 footer like I did a few years ago its real easy to get blown right onto the shore in a few spots where its narrow and shallow. Coure da Lene lake is only about 30 feet deep except at the mouth of the rivers but Pend Orielle is so deep they have a navy sub base there. Supposedly theres an under ground channel right to the ocean but its too small to navigate.

I was listening to a story on NPR a couple weeks back about it. It seems the anniversary of the accident was not too long ago.
