I think I've got some Rat Rod material...

Hey all,

Last Thursday I went and picked up a '65 D-100 from Lincoln, NE. I had a 318. 904, and a LBP A-Body 7 1/4 that a guy needed for a daily driver '65 Dart. I drug that puppy home on a dolly behind my Dakota (no motor in the Truck!) and that gave me time to think on what I want to do with it.

Anyway I've always wanted to build a Rat Rod, the only problem being my stuff was too new, they would look like ghetto cars if I used say a '78 Monaco or something.

I THINK this Truck is early enough to fit the bill. It has the '62-early 65 grille in it. Truck is kinda rusty but thats no big deal. Its also a longbed, also not a big deal.

I'm thinking take this body, fix the rust using patch panels I can make out here and slam that sucker on a later SWB frame I've got out here (I have 3 with half bodies on them). It would take some experimentation to get that body right but hey, I'm cheap and I dont want to stay with the original I-beam frontend and I cont want to cut and splice either.

For motorvation I'm thinking 318 Magnum FI with an A-518OD. I have enough cash now to get a JY trans and I have that $35 dollar '01 318 magnum. Or I might go old school and shove a carbureted BB down into that sucker.

For paint I'd like to go flat black and have red steelies and doggies. Cop wheels maybe? I'd also like to have the flame thrower exhaust tips for it as well. Interior-wise, I have a pair of high back '75 Coronet buckets that I can use for seats and I could come up with something for a shifter.

So, is my Truck old enough to be built into a Rat? Would you go modern or old school on the drivetrain? Here is a pic taken by the prvious owner. Havent got any of my own yet.

i dont think it's old enough.... iffin it were a 50's truck... i'd say go for it.... as far as the motor.... no replacement for displacement....

i always liked those style trucks.... but i dont think it would look good as a rat rod.... IMO anyway

damnit narrow the hood 18 inches and send it along with the grill my way...its the face i want on my 70....ratt'n it out has to be done just right and you will have to draw in as much 50s style as you can as well as refinement mixxed with unfinished..top chop is a must..loose the tail lights and replace with something OLDSCHOOL..flat paint smoothed gate, slam the body to the weeds but use TALL tires..go 50s in the interior includeing the guages..idealy i think the 54-56 savoys would be sweet dashes for a truck..KEEP the door handles or change em to something a tad older for wheels..anything that screams 50's

i think on mine to give it more rat im actualy going to raise the wheelwells to acomidate taller tires.....if need be i could throw out millions of ideas that would help make it into a true RAT or atleast as close as you can get not being a pre 50s body

Other than the rust the old girl looks pretty clean.Personally I'd be more inclined towards modernizing it with newer front suspension/brakes/steering,etc..., and have a cool old/new truck to haul stuff with.
