i thought i had a left rear wheel seal fail so i yanked the axle shaft out & YIKES. the 6 bolt flange that holds to axle in place has seperated from the axle causing a real problem.

question. is the flange part of the axle? can it be replaced? its a press fit or crimped fit.

8 3/4 30 spline 29.5" axle. i sure need this fixed before weekend.

hey Greg
Welcome to the world of racing!
You need some aftermarket axles from MW or Strange or Moser. Stock stuff just don't cut it!! Your slicks are going to find all your weak area's real quick.I've got those Strange axles for the Dana all you need is a housing cut down to your length. Actually it's probably time for a spool & axle kit for your 8 3/4.

Greg, are you talking about the bearing retainer ? Or the flange that is welded to the axle that holds the studs ? By seperated, what do you mean...has it split or just moved inward ?

The bearing retainer is pressed on. You could just go ahead and upgrade to a set of the green bearings which are sealed units and have those pressed on. Like Kevin says, the stock parts are on barrowed time. I just had a Dana 60 built for the 68 with strange 35 spline axles and 4.10 clutch style SG unit...for this very reason.

The green bearings will buy you some time....assuming that it's the bearing retainer that is the problem. Green Bearing Company pn: rp400. These come with an integral flange as part of the kit....press them on and go.

Ps. Take a close look at the splines for evidence of twist. If the splines are twisted it's new axle time.

i figured out what happened. the bearing retainer with the adjuster must of unscrewed (no lock) & then cross threaded itself back on. this allows the alxe shaft to move about 3/4" back & forth through the bearing.

i located a bearing retainer last night from a b body that will work. i'll try today to find green bearings. i may have to put it together for the weekend with the original stuff until i upgrade.

thanks

the spline & shaft is straigt. should be able to get things back together before the weekend racing.

the weather man looks like he may frown on us again

I recently cut a set of greens off my car and tossed them in the trash, since that's where they belong FOR STREET CARS.

Is your car strictly or mostly strip? If so, then go with the greens. Do you like to change axle bearings every few years? Then go with the greens. In all other cases, stick with the tapers.

BTW, that axle shaft isn't moving through the bearings, the bearings are moving with it. If they're not pressed tight, then you've got serious problems.

CUDA's pretty much a drag car at the moment. i stayed with the stock bearing so i can race this weekend. hope i can get a full season out of them & then a possible axle upgrade.
