Livin' my life...one gas station at a time.
I just picked this little gizmo upoff ebay a few days ago ---> http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=320219357950&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=011. I still waiting for it to arrive in the mail though.:shifty:

I've been looking for something like this for a while now. I want to use it for my aircraft project (whenever I get around to actually starting on it ) to give me the ability to view and record from the cockpit using a LCD camera mounted under the plane.

Since it will be a tail dragger, I would need to weave the plane left and right (S-turns) in order to actually be able to see the runway while moving slowly on the ground. Thats because normally all that's visible straight ahead, while all three wheels are on the ground, is the forward part of the fuselage and the engine cowling. When the ground speed increases enough to allow the tail to come up the pilot is able to see forward over the forward cowl normally.

My idea is to mount a small forward facing LCD cam under the belly of the plane with a monitor in the dash. I drew it up in the pic below to better explain the idea.

I already have a Sony Super CCD cam as well as a couple of different size LCD displays I bought before this. However I wouldn't be able to record anything with those LCDs. Since the GoVideo unit can record as well as display video and sound, I will also be able to make movies of the flights once it's all up and running properly.

Since the plane will be a long time in coming (years away), I figured I could still use it for it's intended personal entertainment purpose till then.

Unless I do something similar with it on the Challenger first that is...:toot:[smilie=i:

EDIT: Added pics of the camera and the GoVideo unit.

You can fly a plane gomo? Awesome. :) :2thumbs:
Well, now that I think, I guess the flying is the easy part, the landing and not crashing into stuff would be the tough part.

Go, what plane are you planning on building? I grew up around them, my dad was constantly building experimental aircraft. We have a strip on my moms farm. :) I was part of a team that built ultralights years ago... :D

i could do so many things with that camera :toot:...nah i would probably just strap it to the cat to see where he goes :wtf:

It's a Rand Robinson based design KR-1, single seat experimental plane. The original engine called for in the plans is a 80 hp VW Type 1, 4 cylinder. Quite a few builders have sucessfully run 110 hp Corvair 6 cylinder engines to power them. I'm planning on using the Corvair mostly because of the better reliability record of that engine when converted for aircraft use. I'm going to legnthen and widen the fuselage and wingspan slightly to fit me better, so the extra power will be nice. I'll also be using a special airfoil profile on the main wing and tail that was specially designed for this airframe.

The web support for this aircraft, and its bigger siblings the KR-2 (2 seater) and KR-2S (longer version 2 seater), is immense. The modified airfoil was developed by the main web group a few years back. There are a few aeronautical engineers in the group that volunteered their time to the project. Others in the group without technical expertise donated funds to pay for the expensive wind tunnel studies. The result was a better airfoil with more lift, less drag and a thicker cross section which allows for larger wing tanks.

The pilots license is on my after-military retirement "to-do" list. :toot: Unless I can get to it sooner (unlikely), that will be about 2 years away. Until then I use MS Flight Simulator and X-Plane 8.0 to hone my skills. I can fly a mean keyboard now!;) I have a KR-2 aircraft profile (also designed by a member the web group) for X-Plane so I've been using that one mostly lately. It even uses the dimentions of the new airfoil. I picked up a set of rudder pedals recently to go with my Saitek joystick and throttle setup.

The plane itself is designed pretty much like a giant R/C aircraft. It uses a wood frame with some rigid foam shaped to form the complex contours and a fiberglass skin to tie it all together. It can be as simple or as complex as you want to make it. The lighter it is, the better it will perform, so I'm not going to go TOO crazy with mods. I hope to be able to get it some where around 600-650 lbs fully fueled (without pilot) with what I have planned for it. 500 lbs isn't unheard of for a barebones KR-1. With the Corvair, the usual fuel consumption is around 4.5 gph and cruise speeds just under 200mph. Stall speed is expected to be around 45-50 mph with flaps, 50-55 mph without.

More pics added below...

call me crazy..but i like to know when an engine dies..i can STOP get out and look at it

very cool to see someone building something like this from scratch

i think if i EVER wanted to take to the air it would probably be in something like the gyro copter design used in madmax

You'd be suprised for sure. I for one would just love to be able to see from the perspective of a cat while it was prowling around on a hunt or visiting with other cat friends...:p

hopefully you wouldnt get a nice view of him barfing in youre shoe .

Well, the GoVideo unit arrived today. Now I just have to go dig out (find) my CCD camera and hook it up to this thing. :)
