Drag racing is supposed to be fun, but sometimes it

SUCKS

2 day event. our 2nd time trial on saturday CUDA (POS) sorry ran its 2nd best et @ 7.59. then CUDA started to fall off its times. engine started to miss. yanked plugs. all good. changed 1 ignition wire. cuda getting worse but we still were winning rounds so we kept running. 7.64 7.68 7.74 7.84 7.91 7.95

today. pulled mechanical fuel pump & opened it up .. all ok. still missing. changed all the rest of the ignition wires. still missing. changed timing. still missing. pulled a demon 850 carb off a buddies 74 CUDA & hey sounded somewhat better. no time trials the races are started. drive down the the lanes & wait our turn. try to start- dead battery. chit. NO START NO RACE WE LOOSE. charge battery. pay 25 bucks & buy back in. 2nd round back into the water trap & CUDA stalls, floods & won't start. they gave us about 15 seconds & pushed CUDA off the track. LOOSE AGAIN. chit waited 5 minute started & drve back to the pits.

so CUDAS still broke. i'm supposed to go to north bay next weekend to race. i've got more tinkering to do.

a not so happy greg73cuda

Oh damn Greg, that is crap. Just as a thought, but is there the possibility of a bad valve or two?
I hope you can go racing....I bet Sandwich would like to meet you!

sorry to hear that greg,,got a pos jammed in one of the carb jets? did you play with the jetting at all ? any chance of a vapor lock ?

is the chargeing system working?..only reason i ask is whener i had a volt reg die..my fish ran but missed alot and sometimes would just run for crap in general

another thought..hows the tank pickup sock?

Things to check:

(1) relucter gap...it should be .008
(2) burnt cap and/or rotor
(3) Output voltage : you are running lots of new electric accessories this year....fan, water pump, msd etc...

These accessories will draw more juice from the electrical system which may be getting overtaxed at this point. You also have the March pullies on the motor if i'm not mistaken...if they are underdrive pullies then you alt will be showing less output. The msd units need at least 12.5 volts to operate properly.

The fact that et's dropped off with each successive pass leads me to suspect the charging system isn't able to keep up and the battery is getting drained. A compression and leakdown tests would eliminate any mechanical questions and would be worthwhile performing at this point.

frig! hope you figure it out. the guys would like to see you and the 'cuda here with pics I plan on taking. [smilie=e:

Bummer Greg. I agree with Ron. Sounds like not charging and was running battery down. And like was said the MSD needs 12.5 volts to work right. I hope you get it sorted out. I plan to skip out of work at 4 on Wednsday as we will be taking Ron Jrs Dart to the track to race his buddies Nova. Ron

thanks for the imput guys. i'll start working on CUDA today.

ron FF - the reluctor cap sure looked good. no tool to measure. i installed a 2nd cap, just to try something. i'll check voltage & all accessory draw today.

the miss is intermittant & starts about 4000 rpm. engine sounds strong for a few seconds & then misses. it is not a rythimc miss.

DW- removed pump, removed 8 bolts & opened it up.

if ya got a msd i vote for that one and also change the coil, if it starts missing etc. the coil is going bad most times

Greg
It's all part of the game! Kinda makes ya want to sit back and [smilie=a:
I remember you bought an MSD 6, did you get the MSD blaster coil too? I would have the coil checked out first then the box. I have a chrome box if ya need to switch back for the w/end. I definitely won't be going to N/Bay. I have to pick up the block & put everything back together this w/end. Hopefully have it ready for some testing the first week of july at Luskville.

Kevin. i did install an MSD blaster coil too. thanks for the offer for another box. i didn't get a chance to work on CUDA today, but i really got to get on it in the AM to make sure i'm ready for the northern run.

i'll let you know.

well i think we figured things out. FF you kinda hit the nail on the head. the MSD ignition need 12.5 volts to operate properly. my voltager regulator was F'd & wasn't allowing a charge, hence the battery propblems at the track.

i threw on a new set of ignition wires also. my old wires just had too many heat scorches from the headers. i'll sneek it out on the road for a test drive tomorrw to make sure things are ok. (lol try to sneek out an open header 440 @ 6000 rpm).

i heard that a few extra horses can be gained with an alternator cut out switch, so i thew a switch on to try.

well the test drive showed i still have a problem. looking at carb now.

firefighter lent me his 850 holly & a TM7 intake to bolt on. i'll try that 1st thing in AM & hope.......

still planning on going to north bay friday afternoon

Greg, recheck all the MSD connections. The big red wire should go directly to the battery. The small red trigger wire needs a constant current source or it will make the unit act funny. Check the black wire and make sure it is well grounded. How is the tach wired in....hopefully not off the coil like a conventional ignition system. There is a tach output on the box.

Just thinking out loud trying to troubleshoot it. Hopefully it is carb related and the holley fixes things up. Give me a call in the AM after you've done the manifold/carb swap.
