Confessions of a Minivan junkie

Hey ya'll... As the title says, I've been a mini junkie. I used to own a 87 Grand Caravan, modded the 3 liter motor in it somewhat, did a little offroading in it... Four years ago I let the beastie go and I have regretted it off and on. I know, the minivans aren't special like a Charger or a Challenger, or a Newport or other classic Mopar.

I currently own a 2003 Neon SE, a 95 Grand Cherokee Laredo, a 2002 FOrd F150 Supercrew and a 1990 Ranger 4x4 2.3...

If all goes well this summer, I might even add a couple of Jeep Comanche pickups, an 86 with issues likely to be parted out, and an 87 4x2 that will likely receive the 86s parts. Both are 2.5s but one is 4 speed the other 5 speed. I'd also like to see about running the 87 on 89 or 90 turbo minivan ECM and adding a turbo to the old AMC 4... I know I need more than that but we'll see...

Though, evertime I seem to gather parts or project vehicles, I get laid off or have a job change. For instance, I bought a 88 Daytona I was going to cleanup. A year later, I was laid off. Found a job the day after I got my notice, but the project became a hassle and I parted the car out. Kept the 2.2 T2 and the A555 and ECM and such, decided I was going to build a rockcrawler, gathered a couple Toyota truck IFS setups and a bunch of other parts, and was going to get a sandrail chassis to modify. Yup, got laid off. 10 weeks. Sold off everything but the motor and such. Decided to build a MINIVAN desert truck... Gathered a Cherokee 2wd front axle, springs and control arms. Located a 86 Caravan with blown up 2.6, and a 88 or 89 Dakota 4 banger for the transmission and rear axle... I was going to use the 88 2.2 Turbo2 motor and ECM, the Dak trans and rear axle, go with a radius arm style long arm setup for the Cherokee front axle and match the lift in the rear. Basically had everything else on hand but the van and truck. Offered a job in another state... This time, I sold everything. At least the motor and trans from the Daytona went to a good home, that guy has three 88 Daytonas...

So sure, I'm thinking the little Jeep trucks would be fun, but I'm back to thinking about minivans too. In fact, I signed up on this forum because of rumors about V8 powered minivans brought me here.Would love to see some pics as I searched and there isn't anything worth looking at that I could find...

And I am thinking the desert styled truck is the way to go, especially if I trash the 86 and use that front axle for the 87 truck, I can use that 2wd axle for a van, as well as the Dana 35 from the 86...

So, my name is Roger and I'm a minivan addict... Interesting place here...

tha thought of a desert minivan is a hell of an insperation to me

our leader has the v8 caravan....every play with a 2.5 turbo minivan..there fun

A Neon, why would anyone buy a Neon????:shifty:

Actually, I bought the Neon after my 140 mile a day commute killed my 94 Concorde (which I replaced with a Supercrew), and then it killed my 87 Caravan. I bought the Neon because of the mileage. :giggedy: And then grew to love the little beast... :bravo:

So, I'd love to see some of the V8* minivans...

v-8 minivans are kinda like snipes.... hard to find and even harder to catch.....

Yes, I have played with the 2.5 minivans. Looking back I should have dropped that Daytona Turbo2 and 5 speed into the old minivan, but oh well.

I used to take the old Caravan on some desert roads, minivans suck in soft sand :helpme:, but I never got it stuck :toot:. As for making it a RWD monster, the stock rear beam axle is funky, and putting a straight axle under it would have raised the rear like 6 inches, then I'd have leveled it out with the Cherokee axle and coils. I would have made (well, a friend was going to make it) an engine cradle to replace the K frame and provide a place to mount a steering box. I'd have to make a transmission crossmmber, and alter the floor of the van for a transmission.

Shoot, I even asked Advanced Adapters if they could make a plate to adapt the A670 3.0 FWD automatic to a LA series V8. But, it was seriously expensive for the first one and engineering $2000+, and then a minimum order of 10 more for like $450 each. Needless to say, I can't afford that so that idea died. Besides, the passenger side "frame rail" would need to be hacked and reinforced. But yeah, a FWD V8 minivan...:giggedy:

Damn I need another minivan...[smilie=f:

So, OK, I've shown a V8 minivan, shared a couple of my ideas (OK, I'm a nut too). Lets see some more V8 minivans... Like the offroad guys say, no pics means it didn't happen!:wtf:

You've probably already seen the pics of it and didn't realise it. The V8 minivan methioned above is the one thats been on YouTube (and other vid sites) shown smokin a crapmaro on the 1/4 mile track. A bunch of us Moparnuts (me included) have seen it in person at the last Mopar Nuts Nats in Canaduh last August. It was built by a member here (V8 Voyager) and is now owned by the site owner (XLR8R). Check out their posts here and I'm sure you'll find plenty of pics of it. I think it may be for sale again but you'd have the ask XLR8R to be sure.

Welcome to the Nuthouse BTW! :bravo:

The only minivan beating a Camaro vid I've seen is Paul Smith in the Chicago area. That van is a 2.5 turbo with lots of goodies in it. I believe Paul was the first one running into the 12s. I think there are two other FWD turbo vans running 12s now too.

If that is the van you refer to, it is FWD. If there is another running, I haven't seen it and streaming video content is filtered here at work :naughty:. Pauls van can be seen at http://www.turbovan.net/van.html

Unless I need to enable something different for the pics on this board to be seen, I haven't seen any minivan v8 pics. And I'm on way too many other forums :shifty: as it is...

I can't see most pics from work due to filtering, and I can see lots of pics at home, just no V8 minivans. Not doubting their existance, I've seen some weird things over the years including jet powered Honda hatchbacks (back in the 80s).

Thanks!

Oh, after going through another search round, I see two instances of folks asking for photos. And, Even though "once upon a time" clicking on V8Voyager's signature or avatar would have brought up pics, the only wensite I see now is for computer stuff (which I'm also into, neat site...). The minivan videos referenced in multiple posts are of a FWD, the same one pictured above.

And, here is my silly little webpage... http://www.geocities.com/phatfoto Lots of stuff in it, not good old V8 stuff, but some easy repair stuff for the K car based vehicles.

Hmmm, I can't verify the video, but I have seen the v8 caravan in person.

Here's V8Voyager's original For Sale post: http://www.moparnuts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=773

Here's a post with pics of the MoparNuts Nats from this past August. The minivan pics are of the vehicle in question.: http://www.moparnuts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10711&highlight=voyager

This thread had the reference to that video claiming it to be of this van. After rereading the thread it looks like XL mentioned that the vid probably wasn't this van. Sorry bout that, my mistake.: http://www.moparnuts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10793

Well, I can't seem to find the post with the pics I was thinking of. Either way, I know what I saw with my own eyes. However, you're still entitled to be skeptical if you like.

Doubt on my good nut, doubt on. :p

I can't see any pics other than avatars and somesignature pics in those first and third links, and I do not have permissions to view the second link.

I do not doubt too strenuously that this van exists, I just can't seem to view the evidence.

As for the vids, Paul Smith is one of my internet friends. One of the tight knit Shleny Dodge crowd guys even (I'm not because I never really joined). We had a few conversations when he found the van and after he purchased the van. So, as much as I can verify in an internet world, that van IS a 2.5 FWD turbo. And yes, it runs like a scalded skunk.

FOr whatever reason, I just can't see all the pics that are supposed to be on this forum. Frustrating for me, because I read through the threads and all the good stuff going on, but just can't see anything.

So XL, I could PM you my email account if you would like to attach some pics. I am NOT calling anyone out. That is not my style and PLEASE don't get that impression. I'm just wanting to see some cool photos!

Hehe, just like a newbie, stirring up trouble...

I think the pics that you can't see are in the Member's Pics section. You don't have access to that becaus eyou haven't succumbed to the... errr... fulfilled the requirements.

The Member's pics section is a place where we can post up pics of ourselves and family and friends knowing that will be kept safe in that section as it is not open to the general public. It's a way to get to know each other and put faces to names...

To get access to that section you need to send xl a pic of yourself - sort of like a "Okay, I'll play along" gesture.

If pics are linked in from other sites that don't show up for whatever reason, there's not much that can be done here except to have the poster upload the pics to this site rather than hotlink from the other.... That's a function of the other site where the picture is hosted - not the board here.

I did some wuick searching and I can't seem to find any pics of the van in question... I have seen/touched/smelled it for myself though.

Oh Hey, I think I have a pic of just it from the 'nuts nats last year...

Yup. Found it.

Not very telling in terms of what it is though...

This was the pic I took as part of all the pics I took of the cars out front to determine the wiener of the "show."

It didn't win cause it had an unfair home court advantage. :shifty:

I think that qualifies you for access to the Member's area.
